Basic smart light switches are available for as little as $20. If you can install them yourself, it’s a home upgrade that won’t break the bank.   • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window. 

While you can technically live in a home while it's being rewired, prepare for some debris and dust if your electrical contractor needs to remove parts of walls, floors, and ceilings to access wires. If you stay home during the project, ask your electrician to cut the power supply to all exposed electrical wires to keep your family safe.

You should never plug a normal 120v appliance into a special 240v outlet, as it can quickly burn out the appliance. This will cause irreparable damage to the appliance and, in worse case scenarios, cause damage to your circuit breaker. Check your appliance’s rating before plugging it into a 220v outlet to avoid electrical disaster.

For more complex electrical projects, it’s often most efficient and cost-effective to hire an electrician rather than trying to figure it out yourself (and risking electrical problems). Electricians know exactly what a project requires, and can often find supplies or parts for cheaper than the average homeowner. That can save money compared to going it alone.
