"We have used Tom Smith services directly twice, and indirectly a third time. It was his design that led to buying our home in Montecito. He subsequently designed a beautiful wine room which has given us and our friends & family many wonderful memories. We are currently working with Tom on a kitchen redesign and highly recommend him. "They started off great, fast and professional. We had them create blue print plans from my design. I had to pay their full bill before they released final plans which was fine of course. However, my contractor and I ran into a problem on part of their design and engineering and that's when the service went to crap. The contractor and I have been trying to resolve the issue for more than two weeks little success, in fact just the runaround. The Engineer tells us he needs to talk to the architect; the architect says he'll talk to the engineer and nothing happens. That's gone on for two whole weeks. My project is a dead standstill for two weeks which is not acceptable. That's also screwed up the schedules of the contractor and their sub-contractors Therefore what would a bit of five star rating for these guys turned into a 1 to 2. I was very happy with the beginning of the process but once you pay them you can forget about any additional service if you have questions. On the plus side, they seem like nice people to work with, the plans were put together well, and their prices seemed reasonable. As noted above, their follow up service is completely lacking. I would gladly paid another designer more to get complete service that didn't leave me hanging for weeks on end. Today starts week 3 with no resolution."

"Brain not only did the working drawings for our remodel, he also was directly involved as the project was built, checking in with contractor and subs to be sure things were progressing in a timely fashion and being built to the specifications. He was also very helpful getting the plans through the city permitting process."

The creative process is what has driven me with my career since my early years as an architectural student.\n\nI have close relationships with my clients are a priority. I work closely with my clients through every stage of the project. I have designed a wide variety of projects, involving both new construction and unusual renovation and reconstruction of existing structures. My work has included office buildings, industrial buildings, retail centers, University faculty housing, multi-family residential and private residences including homes for several celebrities and other note-worthy individuals. Through years of experience, he has developed an architectural language that reflects an understanding and exploration of a buildings impact on its environment. Architects and buildings are not isolated from the world, and I acknowledges the contributing factors of context, site, client and program, design and detail in every aspect of the work.\n

Architects questions, answered by experts

Start by researching local contractors with experience in cottage construction. Ask for references, check licensing and insurance, and review completed projects. Compare multiple bids, making sure each includes the same scope of work. A good contractor will communicate clearly, provide a detailed contract, and ensure all work meets code and safety standards.

An architect plans and designs new construction and alteration projects. They often provide sketches for homes, office buildings, shopping malls, and other structures.

You'll find Arts and Crafts homes across the country in varying styles. On the East Coast, bungalows and Tudor Revivals fill the Boston area through New Jersey. In the West, Mission-style homes incorporate terracotta shingles, white stucco siding, and rounded archways.

The most idyllic building material that encapsulates the feel of Federal architecture is a brick facade, often with bricks alternating between long side and short side. Palladium and arched transom windows are also prevalent, as are flat, white window lintels. More ornate Federal architecture buildings also include columns on either side of the front door. More important than most of the finer details, though, is the symmetry from the exterior. On the interior, ornate plaster moldings and plaster ceiling medallions are indicative of the style.

Get prepared to meet with an architect by having a clear idea of what you’re looking for, a list of questions to ask, and as many project details as you can provide. The more information you can provide and receive from a prospective architect will help you decide who to hire.
