"Called Sal's for help. Bryan came within an hour. We decided to start with the easiest fix yesterday, which was to replace the seal on an upstairs toilet (30 years old) above the leak. Bryan was courteous, knowledgeable and professional, The seal was almost gone. Although initially, we thought that fixed the problem, the leak seemed to resume later in the day, so called Sal's back this morning for a more aggressive approach to finding the source of the leak. They sent Nick within the hour, who also was experienced and professional. He carefully draped the area and then removed the ceiling which was wet. Fortunately, the leak was from a pin-sized hole in the cold water line right above the spot. He left to procure supplies to fix the copper pipe without having to solder and risk more trauma to the 30 year old pipe. Leak was fixed within 2 hours of his initial arrival. He cleaned up. I will call them again for any of our plumbing needs. Responsive, experienced, professional."

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Outdoor plumbing issues are no less serious or urgent to fix than interior plumbing problems. These problems may require excavation and lawn repair due to the plumbing often being buried underground. The most common outside plumbing problems include:

  • Clogged landscape drainage: $200–$1,000

  • Clogged sewer lines: $60–$250 per linear foot

  • Corroded or rusted pipes: $1,500–$15,000+

  • Leaking drain lines: $200–$1,000

  • Leaking water mains: $300–$4,000+

  • Septic system failure: $600–$3,000+

  • Tree roots in pipes: $200–$1,000

  • Well pump failure: $350–$1,500

One way to save money on sewer lines is to install a sewer cleanout since it makes sewer line maintenance easier. Keeping up with maintenance is key to reducing the cost of repairs, so be sure to schedule annual plumbing inspections, install drain guards to stop objects from accidentally falling down drains, and only flush human waste and toilet paper to protect your pipes.

The type of clog in your sewer main determines the required cleaning method. Different types or methods of sewer main cleaning require various tools like chemicals, mechanical removal, or a combination of both. Some of the most common types of sewer main line cleaning include:

  • Minor debris removal: $100–$600

  • Tree root removal: $100–$1,000

  • Trenchless pipe repair: $60–$250 per linear foot

  • General line repairs: $1,000–$4,000

  • Full pipe replacement: $3,000–$25,000

A sewage smell in your crawl space is usually from a damaged or clogged pipe leaking sewer gasses or actual sewage underneath your home, but there are some other common causes. Moisture, from poor or damaged encapsulation or a malfunctioning sump pump, can harbor mold and bacteria, causing a musty smell. Pests can also get stuck in your crawl space and die, which causes a sewage-like odor.

Unlike regular cleanings, snaking your sewer line should be done as needed. There’s no reason to snake your sewer line if you don’t have any noticeable issues, like slow drainage or plugged drains. You can add it to your regular sewer cleaning checklist as a prevention method (on the same 18- to 22-month schedule), but it’s not always necessary.
