"Ivan and his team did an excellent job painting the walls and ceilings on our townhouse. He consulted with us to test various colors, made recommendations, and managed the entire process. They were always on-time, and delivered spectacular results within our budget. Definitely recommended!"

"George was great. He came out in July and painted the interior of my Mom’s house in preparation of our renting in it. It is a two story story house with 5 bedrooms and 3 baths in addition to all the closets. He gave me a time frame for the job and was done when he said he would be. He did such a great job that we just had him come out and do the exterior. Any time I had questions or concerns he was right there to answer them and explain things I didn’t understand. He’s done such an excellent job that I’m going to have him paint the exterior of our house later this year. I felt that he was very reasonable in his pricing as I had looked at other painting companies and they were much higher."

Customers say: Quick response

"We are very pleased with our kitchen update done by John Savala of Bay Area Refacing. He helped us define the project within our budget (even though it meant less work for him), suggested many helpful improvements to our plan, always left the worksite clean, met his schedule or communicated well the few times things that got beyond his controls forced changes, was a pleasure to work with in general and, most importantly to me, always made sure we were completely satisfied with his work and products during all phases. I would highly recommend John for any cabinet update project."

"Rick and team used LIDAR technology to see how interior walls matched up in our custom home and came up with an open concept floor plan that netted us a new office, walk in closet, walk in pantry, new bedroom flooring and a brand new bathroom with custom zero lip shower. We are thrilled with our new remodel! Ovation runs an amazing team who are very respectful, clean and listen to customer needs."

Closets questions, answered by experts

There are certainly luxury upgrades you can make but you can seriously improve the look and functionality of a closet without spending much money. Color matching will make the closet seem bigger so any shelves painted the same as the wall is a good tip. While pre-made closet organizers may seem expensive they offer an aesthetic look that's hard to achieve with DIY methods. Lastly, removing clutter and unworn items will help the closet seem bigger and cleaner.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

How many days it takes to remodel a closet will also depend on the scale of the project. Small changes like installing a prefab kit will eat up an afternoon and no more, while a total renovation could require several days to a week. If you’re planning for the latter, plan to secure other sleeping arrangements while construction is ongoing.
