"I have a 2x2 skylight in my bathroom which puts out a lot of light. I was shopping for a 2x2 skylight for my kitchen. Josh convinced me that a solar light would put out more light then a 2x2 skylight. I went ahead with the solar light and I like it but question if it puts out as much light as my bathroom 2x2 skylight."

"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"I am so thankful that we found Thomas and the Shield Contacting crew. I hired them originally to repair my roof. Thomas explained everything so well. The team showed up when they said they would, and they did a great job! Since then, Shield Contracting has done many projects around our house. They are courteous and professional, and I would trust them with any home improvement job. I cannot say enough good things about them! HIRE THEM!"

"They are responsive and professional. Contacted them on Monday morning concerning my leaking skylights; Peter Holden met with me on Monday afternoon to discuss my roof issues and started work on Tuesday morning; finishing on Wednesday evening. The total work included replacing my rain gutters. The work crew was respectful of my property and did a through job addressing the skylight issues. After the work was completed, they did a through job cleaning up. It's refreshing to deal with a contractor that cares about their work."

"i spoke with 4 different roofers, and this was not the least expensive nor was it the most expensive. I chose Capitol for other reasons. Since I was the Director of Maintenance for a Summer camp for 35 years, my experience is broad, and I appreciate an explation like I would give. And, i hate scare tactics. The estimated work, its explanation, and execution were all to my liking. the company was prompt, honest, clean, reasonable, and gentlemanly. i could not have asked for more."

"Wonderfully. Jesus Hurtado is your guy. Awesome. One of the tubes was retrofitted into a existing roof/ceiling penetration where a chiminea and ducting had to be removed, and the hole enlarged; the other was new and included a solar powered night light. Very happy."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Most homeowners insurance policies cover skyight damage that is caused by hail. Hail damage is considered a covered peril under most standard insurance policies. However, this only applies if your skylights were properly installed. Also, insurance policies vary, so be sure to check your individual policy to see if skylight hail damage is covered.

In most cases, installing skylights will add value to your home, making them a worthwhile investment for many homeowners. Buyers are often attracted to the aesthetic appeal of skylights, as they make rooms feel brighter, airier, and more spacious by introducing natural light without compromising privacy. Beyond aesthetics, skylights can offer monetary benefits by potentially reducing energy bills. Additionally, models that can be opened provide extra ventilation, which is particularly useful in hotter climates for allowing accumulated hot air to escape from the ceiling. However, the return on investment depends on several factors. To maximize value, it's crucial that the skylights are installed by an experienced professional to avoid risks like water damage, which can deter savvy buyers. Regular maintenance and cleaning are also important. Furthermore, choosing the right frame and glazing materials for your specific climate will enhance their performance and appeal. While skylights are generally seen as an asset, homeowners should also consider the initial cost, which averages around $1,500 for installation.

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.

Yes, if you have ventilated skylights, you can install insect screens on them. Insect screens for skylights cost $10 to $50 each, depending on their size and quality. Most pros highly recommend insect screens for ventilated skylights because they keep pests outside of your home while allowing fresh air inside.

Yes, you can add blinds or shades to both roof windows and skylights, but roof windows tend to have more options available. Retractable skylight shades are popular on both options for added privacy, light control, and heat reduction, although they’re more expensive than manually-operated blinds or shades. If you have a roof window or skylight set in a high ceiling, a motorized or solar-powered skylight window covering is probably your best bet.
