Customers say: True professional

"We purchased a new build in Centerton. Ernesto did all the interior painting- he did an amazing job. The walls, ceiling, doors, and trim looked so good. He stained the kitchen cabinets and is the best I have ever seen. I have had three homes built in three different states and Ernesto has by far the best quality work! 100% satisfaction!"

"We hired Joey to help us with some last minute painting before putting our house on the market. He was able to schedule and complete the work within our short time frame and did a great job! He even repaired and painted some of the base boards that our dog chewed and they look like new! Joeys prices were very reasonable. If all contractors did as well as he did, we would do more projects! If you want a reliable, professional and reasonable painter, I highly recommend Preferred Painting!"

"Five Star Painting deserves every bit of its five-star rating! I recently had the pleasure of hiring them to paint my bedroom, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. From start to finish, they displayed an unwavering commitment to perfection and customer satisfaction. First and foremost, the team at Five Star Painting proved their expertise by flawlessly executing my vision of custom colors in my bedroom. They took the time to understand my preferences and provided valuable recommendations to enhance the overall aesthetic. The end result was a stunning transformation that exceeded my expectations. "HERC was absolutely top knotch. Everything was exceptional. Surfaces were properly prepped and primed and then painted with two coats to ensure superior results. The contractor maintained excellent communication, asking for homeowner's input whenever there was a question on how to proceed. The job was for an entire house consisting of 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a family room, and a stairwell. Doors, baseboards, ceilings, walls, and trim were all painted to perfection. I'd hire HERC again in a heartbeat!"

Interior Painting questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can paint over old exterior paint, but success depends on the condition of the existing paint and proper surface preparation. If the previous coating is in good shape (not cracked, peeling, or flaky), you can paint over it with less prep work. However, for the most durable and professional-looking results, follow these key preparation steps:

  • Clean the Surface: Thoroughly clean the exterior to remove all dirt, grime, and mildew. A pressure washer can be very effective for this.

  • Scrape and Sand: If the old paint is peeling, cracked, or flaky, you must scrape off all loose paint. After scraping, sand the surface to create a smooth, even base for the new paint. Sanding is especially important for wood siding.

  • Apply Primer: Using a quality exterior primer is highly recommended. It ensures the new paint adheres properly, improves durability, and provides a uniform finish. If you are painting a lighter color over a dark one, a tinted primer will help cover the old color more effectively.

Some brands offer paint-and-primer-in-one products for convenience. Taking the time to prepare the surface properly will not only increase your home's curb appeal but also help protect your siding and extend its life.

You can paint over lead paint, or “encapsulate” it with a special paint that includes an ingredient called an encapsulant. The EPA approves encapsulation as a lead paint removal method as long as the paint remains undisturbed. Standard types of paint without an “encapsulant” from the big box stores or hardware stores do not meet EPA standards for remediation of lead-based paint.

Sometimes you can get away with simply sanding and painting over small areas of peeling paint. However, the problem will likely return quickly, and the ridge between old and new paint will be visible. If you just need a quick fix and won't worry about appearance, chip away the peeling paint as much as possible, prime and paint the area, and skip the spackle step.

The easiest and fastest way to remove paint from a surface is to use a chemical paint stripper to loosen the paint and then remove the paint using a paint scraper. You can also speed up the process by making the area as accessible as possible, which could include removing window sashes or taking doors off the hinges.

To remove painted-over hinges for replacement or paint removal, you should use a utility knife to score around the edges of the hinges gently. Work very carefully so as not to damage the surrounding area. From there, you can unscrew the hinges and gently pry them off the door, making sure not to bend the metal.
