"We hired Charles to add a roof to the side of our existing garage, it was a metal roof and he used sheeting to make it stronger, he also used plywood to strengthen our existing fence. He was very concerned that it would be strong enough for Montana winters. Charles is very polite and professional. His work was top quality and very reasonably priced. He was fast, efficient, knowledge and punctual. He was a pleasure to work with. We have already recommended him to others. You won't be disappointed if you hire him."

Building a barndominium takes the longest because you are essentially building a new home. You can expect barndominiums to take six months or longer to build.

The construction stage is almost always the longest part of building a house. Within this stage, framing often takes the most time, lasting anywhere from one week to a couple of months, depending on the home's size, the crew, and the time of year. Other parts of the construction phase include pouring the foundation and installing doors, windows, a roof, siding, drywall, and flooring. The planning and design phase can also be very time-consuming, sometimes taking months or even years, especially for a custom home. The final finishing process, which includes painting and installing trim, is typically shorter than the construction or planning stages.

Skid foundations, deck block foundations, and concrete block foundations are the most affordable shed foundation options. Of these, we recommend deck blocks. Deck blocks are easy to install and level, and they raise your shed up off the ground to prevent rotting from exposure to water and moisture. Keep in mind that deck blocks won’t resist soil movement or frost heave, so they’re not ideal in areas with expansive soil or a deep frost line.

Some cities limit barn construction depending on if your property is residential or commercial. The three main factors your building commission will evaluate are:

  • Height and lot coverage: How tall your barn is and how much of your total property it occupies

  • Setback: Distance between barn and property line

  • Easement: Legal right for another owner to access another’s property

The best lumber for building will be the strongest and most eco-friendly wood your budget allows. That being said, Douglas fir, pine, oak, and maple are all common building materials. Contractors will use a strong, inexpensive wood to frame a house or other structure and finer woods like mahogany for detail work.
