Because the carpet on the stairs tucks into the seam, you can’t see the fringes, and there is no need to hide anything. However, you can use a stair cap if your stairs have a nose.

Since carpet can be expensive to install and choosing a new carpet can seem daunting, it’s important to know when to repair your existing carpet versus replacing it.

If the damage to your carpet Is extensive, such as large sections needing to be replaced, it might be best to replace it. Likewise, if your carpet damage is due to water damage, it might be best to replace the entire carpet to avoid mold problems. Consider repairing your carpet when the damage is localized to one spot or when the damaged carpet is in a low-traffic area of your home.

If your subfloor has warped because it was installed incorrectly, you can sometimes shim the panels (in other words, add a thin, wedge-shaped piece of wood to level the surface). If your subfloor bows upward, you may be able to sand it down at the joist so it’s level, depending on the extent of the damage.
