"I wanted an area to be cooled better, and they came and measured airflow, something no one else has done. I wanted to repair leaking ducts of existing AC unit, but they insisted on replacing the working air handler. New unit works great, uv air cleaning device is great, increased intake of air improved the AC too. My only problem is that I wanted to save 5 year old working (not leaking) indoor unit for use elsewhere, and they left the unit for me, but took part of it with them, leaving it not usable, and will not return it for some reason. I will have to make a cover for that unit to be able to reuse it."

"Daniel and Chase were great. They were prompt and friendly. The guys were very informative. They explained everything they were going to do to my house. They cleaned the inside of my HVAC and each air vent. I have never seen vents so clean. The guys showed me where my system had some mold. I requested at that time to have them spray the entire ducts. The smell of the spray was a mild clean scent. My husband is allergic to everything. When he came in the house he said the house smelled great. (We just bought this house and the renters had cats.) I highly suggest having the air ducts clean to get rid of cat smells. It may cost you, but at least you can breathe better."

"Jeremy was terrific. I've dealt with a lot of A/C contractors, and only a few have been so honest, dependable, and diligent in their work. The estimate was a lot less than the others (a total of under $6K for 3 units - a 6.5 ton and two 3-ton systems). Everything was done professionally, with attention to detail. Even the work area outside was swept clean after the job was done."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

No, for two very important reasons. First, it’s illegal to release refrigerant into the air or ground since it can be toxic and cause environmental damage. Technicians typically pump old or extra refrigerant into separate tanks for special disposal. Second, without professional equipment to read refrigerant pressure and levels, plus the AC’s suggested requirements, it’s impossible to know if you’ve removed the right amount of refrigerant. Stay away from a DIY solution here and seek an expert with the right tools.

Both evaporator coils and condenser coils are recyclable and contain valuable, sellable metals such as copper and aluminum. Not only is it more earth-friendly to take them to a local metal recycling facility, but you can also trade them in for cash. Also, once the coils are removed from the system, they won’t have any traces of refrigerant, so you won’t have to arrange for recycling Freon or R-410A unless you’re disposing of the entire AC system.

There are a few ways to determine if a vent is open or closed. You can inspect the vent and examine the position of the fins. If there are spaces between them, the vent is open. If the fins are flat and touching, the vent is closed. You can also stand under the vent when the system is running to see if you feel air flowing through it.

Signs that your air conditioner capacitor is bad or failing include a range of symptoms. The AC unit may not turn on at all, or it might struggle to start before shutting down randomly or in the middle of a cooling cycle. You might hear a humming or banging noise when it attempts to start, or the compressor might hum without the unit actually running. Other indicators include a smell or smoke coming from the unit, the blower circulating room-temperature air instead of cold air, and an unexpected increase in your energy bills.

They can, but it’s not as common. Window AC units are much smaller than whole-house systems and less likely to develop refrigerant leaks or similar issues. As a result, you will rarely need to add a new refrigerant, limiting overcharging problems. However, it’s still important to leave refrigerant management in the hands of professionals when window units need work.
