"Very well. This was our initial cleaning on our newly constructed home that we moved into (5) years ago. The tank was near to full capacity. The technicians advised that we add an extension onto the screen filter for easier access to their recommended “every-six-month-cleaning” of same. It’s currently underground and must be dug up for cleaning. They also advised that the septic tank be cleaned every (4) yrs."

A cistern works by collecting rainwater from your gutters and downspouts and storing it in a holding tank. The holding tank can be installed above or below ground, and the size will depend on your household needs. Yes, shower water does go into the septic tank. In fact, all the water you use in your home goes into the septic tank. This includes water from sinks, the dishwasher, the washing machine, and toilets. This water is called greywater. It’s important never to put oil or harsh chemicals down any drain because they could cause a clog in your septic system or even disrupt the natural bacteria needed for wastewater management. 

The septic tank needs to be pumped at least every three to five years. If the septic tank is too small for the property, you might find it needs to be pumped more frequently, and during an inspection, a septic company may recommend updating your system to a larger septic tank. While 750-gallon tanks used to be standard, septic tanks with a 1,250-gallon capacity are now more common.

You only need to pump the septic tank. The leach field allows the liquid and waste to naturally seep into the ground, so there’s no need to pump the leach field. You should call a local septic tank pumping service to remove the materials from the tank every three to five years. Without pumping the septic tank occasionally, solids could flow into the leach field pipes and clog them.

Depending on local conditions, a deep well may be a better choice than a shallow well. Deeper well depth accesses groundwater that has been naturally filtered through many layers of soil and rock. This reduces surface contaminants and may offer cleaner water, but deep wells cost more money to build and maintain. The water may be harder and have higher radioactivity, too.
