Whether or not you need to insulate exposed ductwork depends on state and local building codes. There is no national requirement for duct insulation. Even if your local codes don't require it, duct insulation can be useful to increase the efficiency of old, thin, or flexible duct materials. The most energy-efficient windows are double—or triple-pane windows with low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings and gas fills between the panes. These windows reduce heat transfer, prevent drafts, and help maintain a consistent indoor temperature. The R-value is a rating that measures the insulation’s thermal resistance (in other words, how well it insulates). For most pipe insulation, the R-value will fall between one and five. The higher the R-value, the more protection for your pipes. All pipe insulation materials should have an R-value listed in the product description or on the product label.

Polyisocyanurate foam, or polyiso for short, has the highest R-value per square inch: 6.5 to 6.8. Polyiso is a rigid foam that comes with a reflective foil on both sides to serve as a radiant barrier. Given its high R-value, rigid foam is usually meant for foundations and basement walls.
