"Chris provided professional service. He kept me informed on the process of the installation. Chris noticed a problem under my kitchen sink and was able to fix the issue. He provided quality parts and not use the cheap parts that came with my reverse osmosis system. He was very careful and took his time, making sure everything looks and works perfectly. I highly recommend Better water Alaska for your water treatment needs. Thank you, James"

"The workman was very nice and did his work well and wasted no time in getting the job done. He answered questions about my heater/water system and even suggested making some program changes to my circulator that keeps hot water close to all the faucets."

"Dillon diagnosed our problems in minutes and after calculating what we needed exactly and us giving the go ahead he sin the job right then and there after getting the parts needed. He actually fixed our ongoing problem that discount mechanical couldn't diagnose after hours and taught us about what needed to be done down the the tiniest detail and how to keep it on the up and up. I'll never call another plumbing & heating company again, these guys are actually honest and they do the job when they say they're going to do it. It's amazing to meet honest people nowadays."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Hard water isn’t necessarily bad for you. In some ways, it’s good for you. If you’re deficient in magnesium or calcium, hard water can give you a mineral boost that you wouldn’t get with soft water. However, this is where the benefits of hard water pretty much stop. Hard water can cause many minor inconveniences and lead to costly, premature replacements of your water-using appliances.

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.

Choosing involves understanding water hardness levels, household size, desired features, and consulting professionals experienced in suitable system types.

Whether you need a permit or license for a water softener installation depends on your location, as requirements vary significantly. Some municipalities require the installer to hold a plumbing license, some mandate a permit and an inspection, and others require both. In some areas, no special permit or license is needed at all.

To determine the rules in your area, you can contact your local building department or consult a local water softener installer or plumber. Often, only certified professionals are authorized to pull the necessary permits, and they will typically handle the entire permitting process for you. Regardless of local laws, it is always recommended to hire a licensed professional to ensure the system is sized and installed correctly. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check an installer’s license status.

Most of the U.S. has hard water, especially across portions of the West and Midwest. The areas with the hardest water include parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Illinois, North and South Dakota, Ohio, and New York. You’ll find soft water in parts of New England, the Southeast, the Pacific Northwest, and Hawaii.
