"We had 2 1/2 baths remodeled. Overall we are happy with how bathrooms turned out. Working with Ted and his son started off very well; but as job progressed there was a definite lack of communication and many misunderstandings. Ted is very much into following installation 'guidelines'; however they are just guidelines and every home is different and poses different challenges. In the end it seemed that we had to point out several little discrepancies with his work and it became very frustrating at times. He prides himself on being very neat and cleaning up after himself. We did not see that in our home. We have gone through interior remodels before in other homes we have owned; and we did not see a lot of 'common sense' when it came to working within the home and creating vapor barriers or even cleaning up areas where he was cutting tile/flooring. A lot of this could have been avoided if planned differently. Also, towards the end, felt like he was 'nickel and diming' costs. Charging costs of changes on us due to lack of communication as well as transporting costs (which he never mentioned). Again, this could have been avoided if communication would have been better. I am thinking Ted's experience would be better suited for outdoor projects like building a deck versus interior remodeling."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Costs range from $1,000 to $3,000, depending on the skylight type and installation complexity.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

It is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, but we don’t recommend it. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak, given their more horizontal position on the roof, which means any mistakes during the installation could lead to massive water damage and high repair costs down the road. Hiring a professional to install your skylights is an additional expense, but the long-term cost is usually higher if you DIY, as you could need replacement sooner, and you’re more likely to run into water damage.

Water will leak through a skylight if there are issues in the sealing of the skylight. Find and fix those issues yourself if possible, but it’s a good idea to contact a professional, as there could be much more water damage than you initially saw. Plus, it’s dangerous to work on a roof without the proper safety equipment and know-how.

Costs depend on skylight size, roof type, and additional features like blinds or tinting.
