Best Seattle Contractors of 2012

Ray’s Hauling | Woodinville, Wash.

Before a recent move from Sammamish, Wash., Angie's List member Richard McMichael hired Ray’s Hauling to haul away interior walls from a garage. Company owner Ray Foley and his son, Ryan, helped tear them down. “He’s kind of like a family friend,” says McMichael, who commissioned the work before the move to Flagstaff, Ariz.

Foley started hauling 20 years ago while working full time as a mail carrier. After retiring about 10 years ago, he made Ray’s a full-time business. “Fifty-five is too young to sit and do nothing,” says Foley, whose business received 12 Page of Happiness nominations last year. His company, which doesn’t require a license, has grown to five trucks that he owns along with Ryan, and he says he works seven days a week. “I’m a classic workaholic,” he says. “I enjoy it.”

Foley says he picks up very few items that go into the landfill, and metal, concrete, wood, paint and electronics instead get sent to recycling facilities. When not transporting someone’s former treasures, the five-time Super Service Award winner tends to his green thumb. “I work in my own yard doing gardening until I get a phone call,” Foley says.

Northern Pacific Exteriors | Lacey, Wash.

Kasim Shake and Mark Waggoner
started Northern Pacific Exteriors in 2007 because they felt the major roofing company they worked for often neglected customer service. “Our clients’ happiness is actually above putting money in our pocket,” Shake says.

Northern’s business model excludes hidden fees and high-pressure sales tactics, offers green products such as metal roofing materials and Energy Star windows, and recycles wood, metal and plastic, Shake says. Northern Pacific, a licensed general contractor, received 11 Page of Happiness nominations last year.

“They didn’t act like a company,” says Seattle Angie's List member Maria Maxino,
who hired Northern to replace gutters and repair her roof. “They acted more
like a caring neighbor.”

To the T Home Inspections | Bothell, Wash.

Owner Tyler Tachell’s former career as
a general contractor gives him expertise that’s hard to match, says Marysville, Wash., Angie's List member Dan Hargroves. “A normal inspector wouldn’t be able to answer questions or give advice that he was able to do,” Hargroves says.

When home construction began to slow, Tachell moved away from building homes with his father to inspecting them in 2009. “I just kind of fell in love with it,” says the licensed home inspector who received 11 Page of Happiness reviews last year.

Tachell points clients toward energy efficient materials and appliances, like HVAC systems, as he does his inspection. Shoreline, Wash., Angie's List member Aimee Windmiller-Wood says Tachell’s 46-page report allowed her to negotiate a better price on a home she hoped to buy. “Phenomenal,” she says. “It was so comprehensive.”
