"Kevin called promptly, explained his services, gave me an estimate, scheduled promptly (within the same week). Called the day before to confirm appt. Called early morning of appt to tell us he was on his way. Once he arrived, he was very cordial, explaining what he was doing every step of the way. Answered all our questions/concerns. Proceeded to complete the cleaning quickly and efficiently, inside the house and also up on roof to inspect and re-seal the outside portion of chimney. Took approx. 2 hrs. He cleaned up all his tools and equipment and when he left, we had a sparkling clean wood stove and chimney---ready for winter. Highly recommend this young man for all your chimney needs."

You can let a fire burn out in a fireplace as long as you or someone else will stick around to monitor it until it goes completely out. This may take several hours. If your inspector is doing a Level 1 inspection of the chimney, expect it to take roughly an hour. A pro usually can do a Level 2 inspection in less than two hours. However, if you need a Level 3 inspection, this could take multiple days to complete because of the potential for needing to remove materials.

A chimney liner isn’t required for an outdoor fireplace; you don’t technically need one if the masonry chimney uses the proper dimensions and is built to code. However, a chimney liner does serve as a protective coating for the flue. Adding a liner could improve performance, safety, and durability. In short, while not necessary, it wouldn’t hurt.

The short answer is yes, as hearths need to extend a certain distance out from the fire. This is usually around at least a foot in front but is often more, closer to two feet even. There is another distance to consider, which is the distance beyond the opening of the fireplace. Each municipality will have different code requirements.
