"Jim the owner is Absolutely Amazing! We purchased a beautiful home and found out the previous owners sold because the well was bad. (New in 17') 4 times in 5 years this home sold & we didn't know of this till after closing! We didn't know how we'd get water to the property. The local fire dept brought water to the home previously. I contacted the Mayor who was awear of the issue and he tried helping as well as the utility commission in Charleston. We thought we would have to pay to bring water in twice a week. We are also hooked to a neighboring spring that wasn't producing either. I was panicking! I found Royal Water searching the internet and explained the issue to them. Jim was eating dinner when i called, he was at our home in 20 min helping us! Jim the owner had hope, lots of knowledge, & expertise. He felt in our area we had a slow well that just didn't produce much at once and not to give up. I was still panicking! We invested in 2 holding tanks equaling a 1000gal of water, a great pump, 2 high tech pump regulators for well & spring and a state of the art water treatment system. We went from having to have water brought to us to now having 1000gal of water in our home at all times. Jim is AMAZING! He's continued to help us with all questions. This is a true family business that cares about their customers and doesn't over charge. His prices beat all others. Call him, you won't be disappointed and you certainly won't be taken advantage of!"

"The system works well. It took them a day to do the work. We had a pipe burst and pump water into the basement and the sump pump pumped most of the water out -- it surprised the heck out of us how well it worked!"

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

No, hard water isn’t dangerous. The added calcium in hard water can contribute to good bone health. However, it can also cause dry skin and hair. If you have dry skin or hair, consider using a water-softening system to help minimize the minerals in your water. Plus, these systems can also add some sodium to your diet.

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

The most accurate way to determine whether you have hard water is to purchase a water test kit from a hardware store or send a tap water sample to a lab. But there are some signs you can look out for without professional testing. For instance, if you're consistently dealing with mineral stains on your glassware, windows, and shower doors, you're likely to have hard water. Hard water can also make it harder to lather and rinse soap, so if you're struggling to work up a good lather in the shower, hard water might be the culprit.
