"Contracted by my HOA to prune trees behind my home. A branch came down on my privacy fence pulling it backwards. I watched the entire event happen, but the crew denied ever touching the fence. The owner, Jason, was not willing to even speak with me…telling his crew leader to take him off speaker to I couldn’t hear his conversation. It’s an old fence. I wasn’t asking for major repairs or to replace anything. I just wanted them to stabilize the section they damaged so it wouldn’t fall. Definitely not an honorable company."

Look for a tree service company with both general liability and workers’ compensation insurance to protect you and your home from potential damages. Since overwatering can harm mature trees just as much as a lack of water, it’s important to know the signs of an overwatered tree. If your tree’s leaves are yellowing, wilting, or dropping leaves, it’s likely that you’re overwatering. Other common signs include rotting, fungi, soggy soil, soft or peeling bark, falling leaves, and brittle roots. 

If you realize that you’ve been overwatering your mature tree, stop watering and give the soil time to dry out. Then moving forward, increase time between watering sessions. 

If the tree is very small—under 4 or 5 inches in diameter—and you’re experienced handling a chainsaw, you may be able to cut down the tree on your own, provided there’s plenty of room for it to fall.

If you chop it too early, you could stunt the next season's growth. Again, when in doubt, do some research based on the specific tree type.
