Checking for mold yourself is crucial, as catching mold in the early stages is ideal. Mold can appear green, brown, black, blue, or yellow. It can smell musty and can feel like velvet, leather, or cotton. 

Most often, mold grows near water damage. It’s best to inspect these places for signs of mold growth:

  • Basement: Look in corners, windows, carpet, closets, and around appliances. 

  • Bathrooms: Check around sinks, ceilings, and around toilets. 

  • Kitchen: Inspect around the sink, behind the refrigerator, and behind trash can.

  • Attic: Look near the insulation and near intake and exhaust vents.

It can be challenging to know if mold is growing behind walls without knocking them down. If the walls show signs of water damage (discoloration, water stains, or peeling paint) or there’s a musty odor, it’s possible mold is growing. Know the difference between signs of water damage vs. termites because termite infestations are sometimes mistaken for water damage. A more subtle sign might be your own health: If you’re constantly not feeling well or are sneezing, scratching your eyes, or coughing when in a specific room, you could have mold.

In most cases, cloudy tap water is safe to drink because the cause is air bubbles or a mineral buildup. A clear sign your cloudy water may pose a health risk is if the cloudiness is persistent, comes with yellow or brown discoloration, or is accompanied by plumbing issues.
