"They were all very nice and very accommodating, but the doors they had ordered initially had hinges on the wrong side. I wanted all the doors to open the same way that they had been orientated originally. They did take care of anything. They tried to make sure that I was happy, and in the end I was.

"Highly recommended. We needed our attic tested for Asbestos before putting new roof and insulation in. Todd returned my call immediately, patiently answered all of my questions and tested the attic next day. This was great, because the roof was going up 3 days later! "I hired Ridge Top to repair/install siding after removing a deck. The company called back (which many didn't bother to do) and had someone come estimate the work very quickly. The day of the fix the installer double checked the work we wanted to have done. Based on his experience we may slight adjustment to put a board rather siding below the patio adjustment. He was awesome. Overall I was very pleased with the experience and will utilize Ridge Top in the future. Great company."

Not wrapping a house before installing siding can lead to moisture intrusion, rot, mold, and even higher energy bills. Older houses may have siding installed without wrap underneath, so it’s a good idea to add a wrap layer when it comes time to replace old siding to prevent potential damage from water intrusion—local codes may even require it, so check with your municipal building authority. 

For the materials alone, a square of siding costs an average of $600, but prices can range from $100 to $3,000, depending on the material. Vinyl siding costs toward the lower end of that range, while real brick or stone siding costs closer to the higher end. Keep in mind that many boxes of siding contain two squares, enough to cover 200 square feet, so you may need to double your cost if you only need one square.

You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

The lifespan of vertical siding depends on the type of material used and whether it’s properly maintained. For instance, vinyl siding can last between 20 and 30 years, while fiber cement siding can last up to 50 years. Remember that the type you choose will depend on how much maintenance it will require to prolong its longevity.
