"We purchased a home and contacted Elite Exteriors for a consultation on the condition of our existing siding. Instead of just discussing my concerns over the phone, they willingly sent Ryan out to look over the house. He was very knowledgeable and provided clear guidance in managing deterioration and making mends while we begin to budget and save up for replacement with a superior siding product. I really appreciated their customer service. Thank you Elite Exteriors."

"Couldn't have found a better contractor than Nick, Jeremy and their crew. This was the first two phases of our garage rehab and Nick was willing to work with our budget. Phase three will be siding and windows on last three sides and the other half of the roof. First class craftsmanship, always prompt and always communicating (text, email or in-person) made for a worry free experience for us."

"Working with Mike from Windlickers was a fantastic experience. He responded quickly to my call and was responsive throughout the entire experience. We didn't know what had to be done on our roof. Mike was honest about what needed to be done and was willing to work with us. He showed where venting was installed improperly, how the old roofing would damage new roofing and where skylights could create better natural light inside. I was kept up to date through the entire process and never left wondering what the next step was. I recommend using windowlickers for everything from an inspection to full replacement."

"The salesman came and gave us an estimate. The job was completed for the price quoted. I could not believe that they took off 3 layers of shingles and cleaned up so well that I could not tell that there was so much debris. They also protected the neighboring homes on either side so that no damage occured while my project was completed. Excellent. I will call them back for other work."

Siding questions, answered by experts

If you buy new cedar, the process of cutting it usually roughs up the surface enough that it doesn’t require sanding. However, if you buy older cedar or you’re repurposing it from another application, it’s a good idea to sand it. This helps the stain settle into the grain, and results in a more uniform appearance.

When it comes to fiber cement siding maintenance, it’s not too much work. However, it needs to be painted about every 15 years and may need to be re-caulked to prevent mold. Be sure to also wash your fiber cement siding with a lower-powered garden hose at least twice a year to avoid buildup and fading as well.

You may only need to repaint fiber cement siding every decade or so, but you should clean it every six to 12 months, depending on your local climate. First, wash with a garden hose or similar low-pressure device (not a high-pressure washer, which can damage the material) to remove dirt and any large debris. Then, gently wipe down the surface with a soft brush or cloth in a side-to-side motion, following the grain of the fiber cement.

The best siding to cover brick is vinyl or metal siding. Vinyl is low maintenance and affordable, while metal is highly durable and offers some of the best insulation on top of brick. Fiber cement is another great option. Though you can install wood siding on top of brick, it’s not as ideal.

You should consider a siding replacement material that meets your expectations for budget, durability, and if you want to complete the siding project yourself. Some materials are better than others in certain climates and easier to install for beginners. If you’re unsure which material suits your home, check with a local contractor for guidance.
