Dave Thorsen, owner of Northwoods Home Services, completed his first home improvement project when he was 14, finishing out his parents' basement in the Milwaukee area. Since then, he has worked in every aspect of home improvement and construction. As a teenager and young adult, Dave worked for an established contractor in Milwaukee, learning rough and finish carpentry, hardwood floor installation and refinishing, deck building and much more. After college and a move to Dallas, Texas, Dave opened a handyman business where he worked with clients in many of Dallas' most prestigious neighborhoods. Beginning with small handyman jobs, many of his clients eventually asked Dave to take on larger and larger projects, including several substantial remodeling and addition projects. His business spread mainly by word of mouth, with his honesty and eye for detail and perfection being values sought by many of his high-end clients. Dave then opened Thor's Custom Homes and began building residential spec homes, located in the Dallas area's expanding eastern suburbs. These custom homes of between 3500-4500 square feet were located in beautiful new developments and allowed Dave to use his expertise and attention to detail as the general contractor for these projects. In 2009, Dave and his wife Gina relocated to the Wisconsin Northwoods. After devoting himself to the renovation of their Mercer home, Dave is now ready to share his expertise with clients in this area. When he is not working, Dave enjoys fishing, boating and music. A trained jazz drummer, he enjoys playing in his studio in his newly finished out basement.

I am a general contractor with 22 years of experience. I don't just do it all I do it all WELL, and I take my time to make sure that the customer is happy with the end result. I generally work on a half down, half when the job is completed basis, but I will look at each situation individually and determine what is fair to the customer.

Closets questions, answered by experts

You can turn an adjacent room into a walking closet by just rearranging the room. This means removing the furniture and adding racks and an island in the center if you have that in your budget. Houses with two bedrooms connected to each other are great options for large walk-in closets that don't require any structural changes or much building whatsoever.

Plywood offers excellent stability and strength for drawer construction. Baltic birch plywood provides a premium appearance, while standard hardwood plywood offers good value. Solid wood works well but requires more attention to grain direction and seasonal movement.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

You can budget a little less money for how to build a closet with wire shelves than with wood shelves. Some people don’t like the aesthetics that wire shelves provide, though, meaning they’ll gladly spend a little more to add wood shelves to the build. If you decide to buy pre-made wire shelves instead of building custom-sized wood shelves, you’ll be restricted in the closet shelving dimensions you can use.

Built-in furniture maximizes space, offers a tailored look, and enhances room functionality.
