"Bigfoot Stump Grinding did a fantastic job for me. I had several tree stumps as well as several very large bushes that needed to be removed. He worked diligently on each project, did a great job cleaning up and charged a reasonable fee. Would certainly hire him again should I need his services."

"No tree trimming, but brush trimming. Rock retainer wall repair. Rock landscaping. Laid sod for lawn repair. Red granite in outdoor fire pit area, as well as red granite at bottom of steps to the lake. Fred Fisher did an amazing job. He is especially very good at communicating the project from start to end, with no surprises when completed. He is very detail orientated. I would highly recommend Fred."

"Chase excelled in customer service. The job couldâ ve been done by anyone with the right equipment. What made the difference was his responsiveness to my questions and ability to explain things in an easy way. He came in on budget and called in extra resources to finish in a timely manner. Would hire againâ"

Emergency services offered

"We had a 50 ft ash tree ready to come down at any moment and Kirmse was the first to get back to us, came out to look at it 30 mins later, and was back the next day, to our relief. Their team put the tree right where we asked them to and worked quickly and safely pretty close to a power line. On top of all that, the price was reasonable. They'll be the first they call to clear a few other problem trees from our lot."

"We contacted Schmitz Wellman Tree Service after reading their reviews on Home Advisor. They were very responsive to our request for an estimate and came quickly to look over the trees we needed cut down and brush we needed cleaned out. Their quote was very fair and very detailed as to what they would cut, how they would go about doing the work and what each tree removal would cost. After we agreed on having them do the work they started the job promptly. They kept excellent communication with us and did everything they promised they would do and did a great job. We were extremely pleased and will call on them in future if we need additional tree work done. We would highly recommend them to anyone else in need of tree removal services."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

If you’re wondering whether you can plant a tree where the stump was removed, know that the soil conditions won’t be ideal, so you should avoid it. The soil beneath the previous tree will likely be depleted of nutrients, plus there may be roots left behind that will seriously hinder the growth of a new tree. Also, if you use salt or other chemical solutions to kill the stump, these can linger in the soil for months or even years and prevent healthy growth. It’s best to choose a different spot that’s at least three feet away for a new tree, or wait at least a year and thoroughly amend the soil before you plant.

A tree growing close to a house can pose several risks, but removal isn't always the only or best solution. Potential problems include roots growing into the foundation and causing structural cracks, branches damaging the roof or promoting moss growth, and debris clogging gutters, which can lead to water damage. Trees can also provide access for pests and encourage mold. However, a small, healthy tree may not be a problem, and for larger, established trees, strategic trimming can be a cheaper and more beneficial alternative to removal. It is generally recommended to take action for trees within 10 to 20 feet of your home, especially if they are unhealthy or encroaching. Your best bet is to consult a professional arborist who can assess the specific situation and provide expert advice.

Tree removal costs typically don’t include stump removal, as that technically falls into a different service. The company you hire may offer the service for an additional fee; ask them if they offer it to ensure you get the best tree stump removal costs possible.

Generally, avoid trimming trees in the summer (with the exception of pruning fruit trees as needed). Trees use a lot of energy in the summer, most of which is relegated to new growth. If you chop it too early, you could stunt the next season's growth. Again, when in doubt, do some research based on the specific tree type.

Ideally, you’ll have a good enough relationship with your neighbors that you can kindly mention this task in regular conversation. However, every neighbor (and neighborhood) is different. Your best bet will always be to ask directly and nicely, offering to contribute to the tree trimming efforts if you’d like. However, if you are bothered by the tree and your neighbor is unwilling to cut it, you can involve the help of the homeowners’ association or local authorities, if applicable.
