"Overall the company is great, very friendly and quick service. I would have liked more of a sales pitch and more details around what exactly I was buying.
I originally wanted to simply move the exhaust pipe that was traveling through a section I was remodeling. After consulting a few plumbers, one of which gave me an estimate of $1400 to move the pipe, I went with Dan's because of their prompt service. They estimated $1650 to completely replace the water heater and route the pipe out the side of the house (forced air). This was fantastic news for my remodeling project, as I needed all the space I could get.
The plumber stopped over on a Wednesday, and I received the estimate on that Friday. I gave them a call on Monday, and was able to schedule the service for Tuesday! Yes the next day!
Just a few things they could improve on. First, I was never told even the brand of water heater I was going to get, when I called and asked how long the warranty was the secretary answered with a and quot;generally with our water heaters it's about 6 yearsand quot;. Not a real solid answer that I was looking for. I usually like to research the products I'm buying, especially ones that will be lingering in my house for several years.
Secondly, the estimate was very generic. It did state that the $1650 covered installing the hot water heater and wiring up an outlet for it. I removed the exhaust pipe and shut down the old water heater for them before they arrived, and they didn't actually have to install an outlet. But I was still charged exactly what the estimate was. It seemed a bit shady to estimate for all this extra work, find out you have to do less and still charge the max amount.
I will go to them again when I need a quick and mostly inexpensive bit of work done. I wouldn't go to them again for the water heater unless they improve their sales pitch. At least give me a few options, and some documentation on the types of water heaters they provide. They probably could have sucked more cash out of me if they gave me a few options (I would have probably bought the most expensive and feature crazy water heater available).

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

While not everyone can detect taste differences in high-calcium water, water that has a slightly metallic taste probably has too much calcium.

Experts recommend that you put two to four bags of potassium chloride in your water softener every month. This amount depends on how much is in the bag (40 pounds is most common) and what your water softener manufacturer recommends. For more specific advice, talk to a water softener pro in your area and read the manual that came with your system.

Because it’s been through the water cycle, evaporating and becoming slightly acidic thanks to dissolved carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, rainwater tends to be naturally soft compared to groundwater, which has just been in contact with limestone. However, the natural hardness level of water always depends on where you are and other factors.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

The most accurate way to determine whether you have hard water is to purchase a water test kit from a hardware store or send a tap water sample to a lab. But there are some signs you can look out for without professional testing. For instance, if you're consistently dealing with mineral stains on your glassware, windows, and shower doors, you're likely to have hard water. Hard water can also make it harder to lather and rinse soap, so if you're struggling to work up a good lather in the shower, hard water might be the culprit.
