Black mold and wood rot are both types of fungi that form in damp or wet areas, but they cause different problems. Black mold grows on the surface of wood or other materials, while wood rot affects the structure of the wood material. Additionally, inhaling or contacting toxic black mold spores can make people sick. Wood rot spores are not known to cause illness in humans. 

Painting over mold is not an effective solution and can actually make the problem worse. Instead, it traps moisture, which allows mold to grow and spread beneath the surface. Mold must be completely removed before painting to ensure the problem doesn’t recur. If mold is painted over, it may eventually seep through the new layer of paint, causing discoloration and peeling.

According to the EPA, mold allergies are common and can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems, headaches, and other allergic reactions. Mold allergies can also trigger asthma attacks in people with asthma. Additionally, some molds produce mycotoxins, which can lead to very serious conditions, like lung cancer.

Damp air from a humidifier can cause mold in ducts if it raises the air's humidity level too high for the duct system to handle or malfunctions, but it’s not a normal occurrence. To avoid mold trouble, set the humidistat to between 30% and 35% and inspect it often to ensure accuracy.

Mold and other fungi love moisture, so the best way to prevent mold growth after water damage is to remove as much moisture as possible. First, find the source of the water or moisture, such as a leak or clogged gutters, and correct the problem. Next, remove standing water, vacuum up puddles with a shop vacuum, and run blower fans and dehumidifiers for 24 to 72 hours. Once you've removed all traces of moisture, disinfect the area using either vinegar or bleach to kill any remaining mold spores.
