Natural fiber batts and spray foam insulation both work great for soundproofing. Newer materials, such as hemp batts, are more expensive but more effective for insulation and sound blocking. They are also more sustainable. There is also a professional system called Blow-In Blanket Insulation (BIBS) that is soundproof and moisture-resistant. However, BIBS must be installed professionally and can be a costly investment.

Insulating windows without plastic is usually the better method. Outside of simply replacing your windows, you could buy cellular shades, which trap air between the window and the home, add a window film that blocks UV rays and traps heat, or cover your windows with a low-emissivity coating called “low-E.”

Periodic checks for moisture or pest issues ensure consistent performance.

The most obvious con of injection foam is the cost. It’s much more expensive to install than fiberglass or spray foam, but it may be your only option (unless you want to remove entire walls around the home). Another con is that it involves drilling into existing material, which has to be repaired after the foam is injected. Some injection foams are made from products that aren’t environmentally friendly, and improper installation can lead to trapped moisture, which can lead to expensive mold remediation down the road. 

Spray foam insulation can last between 80 and 100 years, depending on the type. Closed-cell spray foam is more durable, while open-cell foam is more susceptible to moisture damage and deterioration. It's important to consult a professional installer to understand which type of foam will be used and its specific longevity. Additionally, be aware that some spray foams can damage plastic piping, so if you have PVC or CPVC pipes, discuss this with your installer.
