"We needed the lintels replaced on several of our windows and a few repaired. We also had some areas of the lannon stone that needed tuck pointing. From start to finish, we were very happy with the work and Tony's prompt responses to our inquiries. We received several quotes for the job and Tony's was comprehensive as well as priced competitively. The final product is exactly what we hoped for - the mortar matches the existing mortal well, the crews worked quickly and efficiently as well as cleaned up the work site after themselves, and our house looks great. What was most impressive was his and his crew's desire to ensure that we were satisfied with the job. He met all of our expectations and was willing to return to look at a few places that we thought might need additional work after they were finished with the job. We would not hesitate to hire TK Mason again for any job!"

"Art and his team did a very good job retiling our old and complex fireplace in our home. They also repaired the fireboxes in two fireplaces, added a damper and fixed some chimney tuckpointing. Art was very responsive and his team was very professional. I understand that Art also provides his masons with benefits and I like supporting local businesses who take care of their employees. I highly recommend Art and his team for your masonry projects!"

"What a wonderful experience! We needed alot of work done on our chimney as well as work on the first floor brick of the exterior of our tudor-style home. It was built back in 1976 and given the steep incline it was very difficult to see exactly how bad it really was unless a scaffold was put up to do the estimate. Once the scaffold was put up to start the work the extent of deterioration was revealed, which was more than anticipated. They alerted us to this but did the additional work. Their work was amazing! Very fine with attention to detail even though their profit had to have been muc less. The selection of brick and mortar that would blend in with the 1976 brick and mortar that was there was outstanding. Price was very fair. I cannot recommend them enough. Not only can you trust them, but you will be so very happy with their skill, expertise and their work product. I would not consider anyone else if future masonry work is ever needed down the road."

"Jack and his team were prompt, professional and the workmanship on our gardens and yard was above and beyond expectations. They helped complete a total renovation of our front yard/garden including stone walls and a beautiful flagstone walkway/stairs. Jack worked with me to make my vision come to life and helped pick the perfect plants for our space. I recommend them wholeheartedly!"

Masonry questions, answered by experts

You can use normal bricks as cladding for a concrete or clay pizza oven or as a base underneath one. Fire bricks or solid clay bricks are necessary for an outdoor pizza oven’s floor, and you can use clay bricks for the rest of the oven.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

No, you shouldn’t lay bricks directly on dirt. While it might seem like a shortcut, it leads to a patio that shifts, sinks, and becomes a maintenance headache. Dirt expands, contracts, and erodes—none of which mix well with long-term stability. To build something that lasts, excavate the topsoil, compact a layer of crushed gravel, and add a coarse sand-setting bed. This layered base gives your bricks proper support, allows drainage, and helps block weeds from creeping through. Cutting corners here just means you’ll spend more time—and money—repairing your brick patio later.

Choose from an abundance of natural and synthetic options when perfecting your hardscape design. Stone veneer costs a bit less, holds up against the tests of time and weather, and also works best in curves and complex walls.

Natural stone, however, provides an organic look to a lawn while providing just as much strength as veneer. Don't forget you can chat with your mason about other common wall materials like brick, cinderblock, and concrete.

No, you don’t need to soak the brick before cutting it by hand. In fact, cutting a wet brick can make it harder to see your score lines and may cause the chisel to slip. Soaking is sometimes used with power tools to reduce dust, but for hand-cutting, it’s best to work with dry bricks for better control and visibility.
