Before investing in motion sensor lights, there are a couple of disadvantages worth noting. For starters, they’re not as reliable as other forms of lighting. Motion sensor lights can be accidentally triggered by pets or wind, which can become a nuisance after a while. The opposite situation can occur, too, where they don’t turn on when you need them to. 

The main difference between can vs. canless lighting lies in their design. Can lighting is the most traditional form of recessed lighting and includes a can-shaped housing to hold the bulb. Can lighting also has a mounting frame that secures the light to the ceiling between the joists.

Canless lighting doesn’t have a recessed housing design. Instead, it has a single unit with an integrated junction box that connects directly to your home’s electrical wiring through the ceiling. Most canless designs have thin, slimline discs with LED lighting.

To achieve the optimal lighting output from your under-cabinet lights, position the LED tape towards the front of the cabinet with the LEDs facing downward. For effective illumination of the work surface and backsplash, place the tape light approximately one to two inches behind the cabinet's front edge. This mounting configuration is especially suitable for dull or matte surfaces.

While under-cabinet lighting isn’t a requirement, it’s one of those features that, once you add it, you’ll wonder how you ever functioned without it. Ask any interior designer or lighting designer, and they’ll tell you that lighting can transform the look and feel of a room. Under-cabinet lighting is also very functional: You can use it to highlight a display of collectibles, illuminate your work surface during mealtime prep, and more.
