You can remove air from your shower pipes in a few simple steps. Turn off the water at the main water supply and open all the faucets in your home, starting with those closest to the water supply and working away from those. Let the faucets run dry, then flush all the toilets in your home until there is no more water in them. From there, turn the water supply back on and let it flow for 10 to 15 minutes until the sputtering stops. To finish, turn off your faucets and flush your toilets in the reverse order.

In some situations, you may be able to try an alternative to repiping your bathroom. Metallic sounds like clanging and rattling are common when a pipe bursts, though they can also indicate a normally functioning hot water system.

While you may hear people using the terms shower valve and cartridge interchangeably, they’re two different things. It can get confusing because the shower cartridge is a component inside the shower valve. The cartridge helps manage the temperature by balancing the mix of hot and cold water.

The signs of a failing valve and cartridge are similar, but if you’re having problems with water temperatures, you’ll likely need to replace the entire valve.

While polybutylene pipes are usually light gray, if you see gray pipes in your home that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re polybutylene. PVC pipes can also come in gray. Check for a “PB2110” stamp, slight flexibility, or a ½-inch to 1-inch diameter, which are also signs of polybutylene.
