"We needed to have our hardwood floor replaced. Mike came and gave us a thorough explanation of what was needed to be done and an estimate of the cost and schedule for the work. Mike gave us many good ideas (which we appreciated and took) resulting in a high quality floor. Mike and Miguel did a great job of replacing the floor and working with our schedule. The floor was done at estimated cost and the expected time. The new floor looks great, Thanks Mike and Miguel."

"IBS did an absolute great job! Got new wall textured, carpets ripped off and laid new flooring on my 2600 square foot house. All in great timing. I have more projects coming up for IBS. Thank you."

"Nick was a pleasure to work with. He's honest, knowledgeable, and was a great help in guiding us to the right product for our needs. He also sanded and repainted some damaged baseboards--a job which was added after our first commitment, and he still finished the job on time."

"He did a very good job on my porch, the only problem I have with it, is that a big puddle of sap leaked up through one of the nail holes after the porch was painted, and I've been unable to clean it away. I would assume if something like that happens the wood used was not properly prepared before being sold for use."

"I couldn’t be happier with my experience with Rockwood Flooring! They recently installed luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring in my home to replace old carpet and vinyl, and the transformation is incredible. Zac, Jason and the team were professional, punctual, and meticulous with their work. Zac and Jason helped me choose the perfect flooring, and the installation process was smooth and efficient. The attention to detail and quality craftsmanship really show in the final result. My home looks brand new, and I highly recommend Rockwood Flooring to anyone looking for top-notch flooring and service!"

Carpet Installation questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to install carpet yourself, it is a challenging DIY project that requires precise measurement, proper cutting skills, and knowledge of correct installation techniques. The process involves multiple steps, including removing old flooring, installing underlayment and tack strips, and stretching the carpet to prevent wrinkles, which can take several days to complete.

Before starting, consider these factors:

  • Warranty: Many manufacturers' warranties are voided if the carpet is not installed by a professional.

  • Tools: You will need to buy or rent specialized equipment like a knee kicker, carpet stretcher, and seam roller.

  • Complexity: DIY installation is most suitable for simple, straightforward rooms. Projects involving stairs or floor vents are significantly more difficult.

  • Cost: While you can save on labor, the cost of tools plus the risk of expensive mistakes—which may require re-installation—can make hiring a professional more cost-effective in the long run.

Given the potential for errors, voided warranties, and the need for special tools, hiring a local carpet installer is often recommended to ensure the job is done correctly and safely.

No, thick carpet padding isn’t necessarily better than thinner padding. The appropriate padding thickness will depend on the type of carpet and the amount of foot traffic in the area.

For example, thick padding works well in low-traffic areas, like bedrooms, where you have soft and plush carpeting. However, thick carpet padding can damage low-pile carpet, which is used in the busiest parts of your home (like hallways and entryways). For that reason, it’s best to use thinner, heavier padding underneath carpet in high-traffic areas.

In most cases, laminate flooring is better for people with dust or other allergies as laminate is easier to clean. Carpet can trap pollen and other allergens, allowing them to be kicked up into the air again with foot traffic. Consult your flooring specialist about the best types of carpet or laminate flooring to use based on your household member’s needs.

The cost to install carpet is $1,780 on average for 330 square feet, the size of an average living room. This cost could range from $200 to $5,000, depending on the amount of carpet, material, and type of carpet.

If you need 500 square feet of carpet, it’ll cost $1,500 to $5,500, while 1,000 square feet of carpet costs $3,000 to $11,000. Polyester is one of the more affordable options, ranging from $1 to $3 per square foot. Wool is a more luxurious option, ranging from $4 to $20 per square foot

In most cases, you do not need to put padding or underlayment under carpet tiles. Unlike traditional carpet, which requires a separate pad, carpet tiles are designed to be installed directly onto a firm subfloor like plywood, concrete, or tile. Many carpet tiles come with a built-in underlay and attach with peel-and-stick adhesive, double-sided carpet tape, or glue. For a more comfortable, cushioned feel, especially in residential settings, you can opt for padded carpet tiles that have a thicker underlay attached. While it's generally not recommended to install a separate pad, a compact underlayment might be used in some situations, though this typically requires professional installation. An acoustic underlay may also be considered in commercial spaces or multi-level homes where noise reduction is a priority.
