Technically, you can install carpet without padding. While skipping the padding can help you save on the project, it will make the carpet less comfortable and show uneven spots or imperfections in the subfloor. Because carpet padding protects the back of the carpet from wear, a carpet without padding can wear out faster than one with it. There are a few things to think about if you’re deciding whether to repair or replace your carpeting. For starters, consider the extent of the damage and the age of your carpet. If there are minor rips and snags and your carpet is still relatively new, it might make more sense to just replace the affected section. Otherwise, if your carpet is nearing that decade mark or has widespread damage, it’s more logical to replace your carpet entirely.

There could be several reasons why your carpet padding has adhered to the floor. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • The polyurethane and floor bonded over years of wear.
