"The guy that came was excellent, thorough and had good manners. He seemed to know what he was doing. He installed a dimmer and some other things around the home. He was going to charge me $80 for the dimmer, but brought it down to $40 when I complained."

"After calling around to many alarm places the prices were all about the same per hour. I then found a 20% labor discount from Majors. I decided to use Majors based on that coupon. I called and got an appointment for 1 week out. I had an appointment Fri at 9:30am. Nobody showed and I called the office at 10:20am, nobody was at the office so I left a message. At 10:30am I tried a cell phone and again left a message. I got a call back from the cell phone person at 10:45 saying that they took Mondays Jobs today by mistake and he was in Seattle. He asked if he should still drive 45 min back to my house. I told him I would be here and 2 guys arrived at 11:30am. One guy was training the other today. The lead tech was very knowledgeable with alarms. I even learned some things as he was explaining things to the new co-worker. They troubleshooted my alarm, found the problem and did some wiring. They got the alarm working and showed me how to use it. They take cash or check, or they can invoice you. (they don't take credit cards at your home) Then they left. I tested the alarm and it was not giving me a delay to turn off as we entered the house. I called them back and they returned later in the day around 5pm to reprogram the alarm. Now it does work great! They were very nice, very good at what they do, I think they just kinda had one of those days.... And YES, I would hire them again!"

"It went fine initially - great advice on camera location and possible setup options, and timely and professional installation of the system.  When trying to set up the wifi camera access there were some technical difficulties with our network setup that led Jimmie to have to come back a couple times to try out different wireless adapters.  It finally got set up and was working great, but after a few weeks the remote viewing stopped working.  I couldn't tell if this was because we had made some changes to our network to improve wireless signal in the house, or if it was because my ISP (Frontier) changed the IP address of my home (which it did since the installation happened).  I tried multiple times to get assistance to correct the problem (mainly extensive research for this on my own since I couldn't get much help from Jimmie) but I have been unable to get the issue fixed, and Jimmie stopped returning my emails.  So I am in the process of finding "real" networking support to come out to correct the problem and get the setup working seamlessly.

So it's great if you have an easy home network set up and your Internet Service Provider doesn't periodically change your IP address (like Frontier FIOS does), and you don't need any more sophisticated IT/networking support.  But be wary if you think you have anything complicated in your network setup (like multiple routers or multiple wireless access points or dynamic IP addresses), or if you think you may need some follow-up networking support.  Make sure you understand all of the details behind how everything is set up (static IP addresses, DNS servers, port forwarding info, etc), because you will have a tough time getting any follow-up support from Freedom Systems after the installation is complete, and if anything breaks you will have to pay to have a networking expert come out to fix things.

"I was very happy with the service and customer support of Homestar. Robin was very helpful in setting up the appointment and explaining the options available. Unfortunately, I don't remember our installer's name. He was very helpful , discussed his planned installation and gave me a complete rundown on the operation of the new system. I was very satisfied with all phases of the project, and will definite recommend Homestar to any of my friends looking to install home security"

"Kris is the owner of Ion Electric. Ion is new and I gather just getting started. But Kris is an expert electrician with many years experience in the field, and handled my call to request scheduling for electric services very professionally. He was patient with my questions and took the time to understand the issues I was having with my house. Ion was timely, accurate, and very professional at all times. The service was scheduled for the day after I called, which is rare. Shane is the electrician that performed the work. He is highly skilled and knowledgeable with a lot of electrical experience (20+ years). He arrived on time and wasted no time beginning work and getting the job done. This job took several hours to complete because I needed the following services: Replace an improper external ground wire in my home's electrical system by adding a new solid copper ground wire and new acorns on the rods. The wire had to be buried to meet code, so there was some digging that Shane had to do. Shane also upgraded the electrical panel with 9 new arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) combination breakers in my existing panel to match 5 previously installed AFCI breakers. This brought the panel up to current code. Shane recommend Arc Fault Combo breakers specific to my panel as they are safer than the previously installed GFCI breakers and can prevent potential fires caused by arc faults. A little Internet research on my part helped educate me about AFCI and confirmed Shane’s recommendation. After all that, Shane upgraded an existing plug outlet to a tamper/water resistant ground fault outlet and relocated the outlet because it was too close to my on- demand gas water heater (A big safety risk! Thanks for catching that one, Shane!). My house was rewired about a decade ago and the wiring was fairly current. However, there was some sloppy work done by the previous homeowner, and Shane made some great recommendations based on items he found to be either unsafe or outside of the standard of practice today. I felt that he was not upselling me. I asked about the quality of my panel and he was honest and pointed out a number of options to improve safety and upgrade to current code. Shane also checked all of the ground connections in the panel and found many of them were lose. He tightened those. I am somewhat familiar with electrical work (my Dad was an electrician), so I knew enough to tell that these guys know what they are doing. They are both licensed and bonded (I checked the WA gov site). They did a great job and I am very satisfied with Ion. The amount charged was as quoted. Since this was a fairly big job and I asked for some important upgrades, the job was expensive but worth every dollar. Finding an experienced and honest electrician is sometimes challenging, so when you find a couple of very good ones that know electrical and are honest, don't worry about cost. Expertise and quality is what you want. There is no substitute for safety where electrical wiring is concerned (Dad hammered that into me and my brothers’ heads repeatedly). My home and my family are much safer today for having these electrical system upgrades by Ion."

Home Automation questions, answered by experts

The main factors to consider when staging your home when selling are your budget, number of rooms to stage, and how long to keep the staged setup. Since home staging costs about $600 per room when using professional services, you may want to only stage the rooms that are most important to potential buyers, including the kitchen, living room, and primary bedroom. You should also consider which repairs or updates are necessary before staging your home, such as painting interior walls, carpet cleaning, and refinishing hardwood floors.

A professional home organizer helps people organize their space so they can live in a neater, more stress-free environment. They help with planning, coaching, and storage solution ideas to get your home in order—and keep it that way long-term.

Professional home staging services can vary between companies and properties, but the primary goal is to set up a house with aesthetic furniture and decor to entice potential buyers. Many stagers offer customizable packages, and you can often pay for additional services. Common offerings include:

  • Design and Planning: Color design, planning each room's layout, and professional interior design services.

  • Furniture and Decor: Choosing and renting furniture, decor, and artwork. This also includes the setup and takedown of all rented materials.

  • Arrangement and Organization: Rearranging existing furniture, decluttering, and organizing the space.

  • Ambiance: Creating a welcoming atmosphere with strategic lighting and accessories.

  • Repairs and Maintenance: Minor repairs, home maintenance, and addressing visible issues.

  • Curb Appeal: Improving the home's exterior with services like painting and garden bed management.

It's best to connect with a professional home stager to see what’s included in their specific packages or to request a custom service.

Understanding the advantages and disadvantages of hiring a home staging service can help determine if it’s the right choice for you.

Pros

  • Helps your listing stand out among other local homes

  • Sell your home faster

  • Increase the value of your home

  • Help potential buyers envision the space as their own

Cons

  • Significant upfront costs

  • Storage cost for items and furniture that don’t fit in the staged rooms

  • Significant time and effort required for renovations and repairs

  • Potential furniture rental costs

Yes, staging a home really works and can help your home sell faster, potentially for a higher price than if you did not use a home staging service. According to the National Association of Realtors, 48% of seller’s agents reported home staging decreased a home’s time on the market.

Plus, 20% of buyer’s and seller’s agents claimed home staging increased home sale prices by 1% to 5%. Although decluttering and cleaning help a home sell, staging can take your home’s curb appeal to the next level, helping to expedite the process and increase your profit.
