"Overall, well. Initially, they wanted to schedule us out a month. Although we didn't need an immediate repair due to the hotter weather, we wanted to get the dead furnace fixed sooner than later. They scheduled us for about two weeks out, which was acceptable. A day or two later, they called and said they had a cancellation and could come out a few days later. They were right on time; prompt and efficient in completing the diagnosis and the repair. The cost was a bit higher than expected, but not unreasonable. (...Especially when compared to a recent automobile repair.)"

"Great company! I met them at a home show and had them come out and give a bid on taking out my old heater and replacing with a heat pump and air handler. Jeremy came out and gave a very thorough bid with several options on compressor/air handler combo. We ended up choosing a middle of the line solution that was very competitively priced in comparison with the other bids we got. What sold me was their attention to customer service and the ratings they received. This was not a cheap system and I wanted someone who would stand by their work and work with us to our satisfaction. I am very pleased. The installer crew showed up on time and went right to work. They found some wiring issues and fixed them as well at no change to bid. They spent a long day but did it all as planned. They took the time to do a walkthrough on the electronic air cleaner and on setting up the new thermostat (it even has weather forecasts on it!) and operation of the system. Again, very happy with that touch. I am also planning on a yearly maintenance contract that extends the warranty of the system if I continue to use them (which I will) for up to ten years. Janice in the front office kept me well informed throughout the process as well, even scheduling inspections. This is a great company that listens to the consumer and does what they say they will. I Highly recommend them to anyone!!"

Small jobs welcome

"I had phone interviewed several duct cleaning outfits. Of course, the rave reviews of Best Air Duct Cleaning on HomeAdvisor helped but Ron won out because he could describe in detail how he would perform the task in my manufactured home. He knew about the unusual cross-over ductwork that is characteristic of manufactured homes and he made sure the cleaning would traverse them during the process. Ron and his helper arrived on time. Ron was very professional and patiently explained the whole process he would use. He allowed me to follow along as they progressed through the whole house. These guys were efficient and great. They asked about my dryer line and I showed how the outside vent was broken. These guys jumped right on it and fixed my dryer vent&line. Ron educated me about a special kind of furnace filter which I'd never need to replace (unlike the standard "paper" filters). Of course this new filter would need occasional cleaning. But, if it worked, it would pay for itself after a couple of years. I decided to give this custom-fitted filter a try. I waited to post this review just to make sure that the company followed through on my order of the filter. It arrived as promised and it fit perfectly in the furnace. Best Duct Cleaning charges about the same as the other major companies. They have the kind of equipment that hooks onto your ductwork--in my case an airtight seal at the vent nearest the furnace--and provides a strong vacuum through a 10-inch tube that goes to their large outside unit. This is the "reverse air" process you may have heard of--not your everyday shop vac kind of thing. They then use another air-hose line to blow rapid air through a special head that has numerous small rubber tubes about 6 inches long. Those tubes "whip" around as the high pressure air flows through them. This device is used to whip up the dust and dirt in the ductwork. The long whip line is fed through floor vents out into the ducts. They selectively block all vents except the one they're sending the whip line into and progress this process from the outer-most vents to the vents closest to the furnace. All the while the large outside unit is providing the reverse air vacuum to suck up all the junk whipped loose from the inside of the ducts. The little rubber whip tubes are not strong enough to harm the ductwork. An ingenuous system. So, all-and-all, I agree with the rave reviews here on HomeAdvisor. I would hire Best Air Duct Cleaning again in a heart-beat"

"Have had an on-going furnace issue that other repair places had blown off because the issue was inconsistent or they spent all their time trying to get me to buy some other heating system. Pacific came and starting trouble shooting and came up with a plan to resolve the issue. Also I called on a Saturday which was not an extra cost and they came the same day I called."

"All services were completed professionally. Due to miss communication part of the service was not conducted (dryer vent cleaned), following contact promptly and professionally this was corrected the next day. I would recommend them for having your vents cleaned."

"Nate, Jason and the electricians that worked with them were fantastic! I couldn’t be happier with their service. They installed a new heat pump and central A/C for me, and were punctual, professional and efficient. They explained the work they were doing so that I understood what was going on, and even identified some potential issues that I hadn’t noticed. I’m glad I went with Hunt’s, and they’ll definitely be my first choice for HVAC moving forward."

Central Vacuum Systems questions, answered by experts

It can be difficult to know right away if your central vacuum is clogged since it operates quietly compared to regular vacuums. However, there are a couple of signs you can look for. If you feel like it’s losing suction or isn’t cleaning effectively, then there’s likely a clog somewhere.

Make sure you turn the vacuum on and feel the end of the hose handle. If you don’t feel any suction, then you’re dealing with a clog in the hose. You can see if the clog is further down in the system by attaching the hose to each outlet until you find the one with the least amount of suction.

The disadvantages associated with central vacuums start with cost. They are expensive to install, especially in existing homes, as retrofitting requires opening walls. The system's bulky hoses can also be inconvenient to maneuver and store compared to portable vacuums. Additionally, repairs may need professional service, adding to maintenance costs. Lastly, while powerful, they may be overkill for smaller homes or apartments, making the investment less practical for some households.

No. Only the hose or the attachments are portable in a central vacuum system. A portable vacuum is a standalone model like a stick, canister, or upright. A central vacuum system is defined by a central power unit, which is installed in one place like an AC unit, and the connected network of piping to funnel the suction.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space

Regular cleaning, sealing, and inspections help identify problems early and maintain aesthetics.
