Dull, drab, peeling and scratched cabinets, paneling and trim? It can look like new again in less than 1 day! Satisfied customers since 1989 and 10 year guarantee. We restore and refinishing interior woodwork with a proprietary non-toxic, dust free process. This service does not change the color of the cabinets, but it restores damaged areas and makes the surface easy to clean.

The installation was professional and they left the condo looking like new. Will hire them again to do additional wood flooring in the future."

My name is Rafe Maxwell, owner and operator of Symmetrix Finish Works. I am 33 years old, live and work in Bellingham and greater Whatcom county. I've worked in residential and commercial interior finishing positions since I was 19 years old. I've been a part of a voluminous amount work over the past 14 years and seen work done right, and wrong as well. I am dedicated to operating a business with clear and honest lines of communication to my clients to avoid the all too common pitfalls of client/contractor relationships. Should you select Symmetrix Finish Works for your project, expect timeliness, cleanliness, attentiveness, and most importantly, a high quality finish.

Cabinet Contractors questions, answered by experts

While most kitchen island installations do not require a permit, some situations do. Any major kitchen renovation will require one, and depending on your municipality, you might also need one if you install new plumbing or electrical work.

Your kitchen island installation pro will be able to determine if you need a permit for your job, which can run you between $460 and $2,900, depending on the permits required.

The Janka Hardness Scale rates wood species according to their hardness levels or density. On the scale, hickory ranks as the most dense hardwood that is common for use in making cabinets. While there are woods that are harder, they're uncommon in cabinetry. Maple, oak, and walnut also rank relatively high on the scale and are excellent for use in cabinetry.

It's possible to replace lower kitchen cabinets without removing the countertop. However, there are some special considerations to keep in mind. Expect to disassemble the existing cabinets without compromising the countertop's support. You might not be able to reuse the cabinets you remove. Next, you'll have to slightly modify the tops of the new cabinets and install blocking after installation to attach the base to the countertop.

As a homeowner, there are a few things you can do to prepare for your cabinet installer. Once the cabinets are ready for your home, you can do the following:

  • Ensure pets are safely in another room, out of the way of open doors and large moving objects.

  • Clear countertops for removal.

  • Tidy the floor the installers will walk through and around.

  • Prepare to have the installers in your home for the entire day, for multiple days, until the project is done. Expect to have a noisy environment, especially if they will remove old, existing cabinets.

The order of the steps for your kitchen remodel depends on the project scope, layout, and contractor availability. However, typically, you would install plumbing and electrics first, then insulation and drywall, before moving on to the flooring, cabinetry, and countertops. Appliances usually go in last. You can then take the time to add the fixtures, hardware, and other final personal touches.
