"I reached out to 5 businesses on Angie's list for quotes and Universal Landscape immediately exceeded my expectations right off the bat. Joey met with me in person, listened to my ideas and gave recommendations to fit my needs. He answered all of my questions promptly via email over the course of the entire project. Joey and the rest of the crew were very nice. The price quote was very fair and easy to understand, with each item described in detail. The project started and finished in the time frame that was given. I’m beyond happy with the results. I would prefer to work with Joey and Universal Landscape for any future projects that I might have and I would recommend them to others."

"We had Tim and Eli of Reach Dirt Works out to do a variety of projects on our 5 acres. They cut in a 400’ French drain system, removed a small hill and prepped our back yard/patio for sod, prepped and built a 100’ retaining wall 5’ tall, pulled stumps, took down trees and processed them, demoed concrete and installed drainage from the house. I was very impressed with their range of skills. In my opinion, when most contractors can accomplish similar tasks for the consumer, I find that the personal quality of the worker/owners is what matters most, and in this case Tim and Eli are above the rest. I would happily use them again and recommend them to all."

"I had a concrete patio replaced and added a cement walkway from patio to road. It turned out great, very pleased, I like it a lot. I subsequently had Collin replace the dirt and weeds between patio and road with new turf. It turned out great too. Thank you Collin."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

While paving a driveway is possible to do as a DIY project, we don’t recommend it. Hiring a driveway professional to pave it will ensure that your driveway looks neat and clean and lasts for years to come, and it will also prevent a weak driveway and, potentially, damage to your foundation. Paving a driveway requires heavy machinery, and while you can rent the equipment needed, operating it close to your garage slab or around your home’s foundation can crack it and lead to structural issues.

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

If you notice minor cosmetic problems with your driveway, you should seal it. Look out for cracks and holes on the surface, faded asphalt or concrete, and stains from oil and other chemicals. Replacing your driveway may be necessary if you’re dealing with significant problems—¼-inch cracks, large potholes, and puddles from drainage issues. The cost to install an asphalt driveway typically ranges between $4,200 and $9,000, significantly more than resealing. Consider talking to a professional to discuss whether resurfacing your driveway—a midway project between resealing and replacing—is a better option for you.

You should not attempt to install your own driveway. Whether working with asphalt or pavement, this is a complicated project that requires special equipment. Talk to some nearby asphalt or paving professionals and discuss your particular needs—it’s a good idea to get a few quotes and look at the company’s past work.

Like all driveway materials, asphalt can crack in the wrong conditions and with age. Many things can cause asphalt to crack, including shifting soil or settling under the foundation. Other common causes are driving oversized vehicles on the asphalt, tree roots, and using rock salt during the snowy season. Proper installation and sealing the driveway every 10 years can help prevent cracks.
