"Their roof repair services go beyond any industry standards. Having to deal with many contractors, we as property management company have found peace of mind when it comes to such services. Ari and Elijah is exceptional and efficient. They have helped several times to fix many of roof leaks in the building we manage. We always thank their hard work."

"The crew was polite and professional. No nonsense, and had a hustle to their cadence. As a retired framing contractor I was pleased to see this efficiency as the job was completed in a timely manner. Impressed they took the time to stop and ask me how I wanted a particular aspect plumbed when in doubt. The job was done cleanly and it looks great. Highly recommended A !"

"I received a call with a more than reasonable quote within hours of sending a request. I orignally painted the wall myself, ran out of paint, bought the wrong color, and made a mess of the wall. Someone was here 5 days later to complete the job and made it so my mess up didn’t happen. Professional, kind, great price, even greater work. The photo doesn’t do it justice because I have poor lighting in the room that makes it look strange, but they did an incredible job with what I had given them"

"Hard working crew, very polite. This was the first time they did a project like this (reframing my garage door) but they figured it out and completed the job that Dave estimated."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Yes, walls on the top floor can be load-bearing if stacked on the floor’s foundation.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
