"The crew was polite and professional. No nonsense, and had a hustle to their cadence. As a retired framing contractor I was pleased to see this efficiency as the job was completed in a timely manner. Impressed they took the time to stop and ask me how I wanted a particular aspect plumbed when in doubt. The job was done cleanly and it looks great. Highly recommended A !"

"They repaired and painted my porches and also fixed another small item on my house. Both Bill and Kathy are not only professional but are personable. I will be using them again and referring them to friends. They are reliable and make sure their work is done right. They go over and beyond in attitude and caring about the needs of the client."

"Hard working crew, very polite. This was the first time they did a project like this (reframing my garage door) but they figured it out and completed the job that Dave estimated."

"ROOF4LIFE did an amazing job on our deck and fence projects. They provided ideas and suggestions that we hadn’t even considered, and delivered more than we expected. Projects were completed based on our time frame, and had all wrapped up before we expected. The carpenters they employ are outstanding, willing to listen to our needs, and over-delivered. I would not hesitate to call them for future projects."

"They have now done two separate jobs on different occasions. Jobs consisted of preparing a floor for carpeting after a animal had ruined the previous carpet and wood. Also fixed my front door which was a little crooked so it stuck. I then called them back for drywall work after I had redid my plumbing. Excellent, professional work for both jobs. Well priced. Went above and beyond. Was also very nice and great to talk to. All around great work that I recommend. And I know we will have other projects for this company."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

When building a house, it is customary to use 16d nails that measure 3 1/2 inches in length to construct the frame. These nails are crucial in providing the necessary support and stability for structural elements like joists and studs, which ensures a sturdy framework.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

It’s sometimes safe to replace a load-bearing wall with a beam, but you need a structural engineer to sign off on the project. You’ll also likely have to upgrade to a steel I-beam or another material that’s stronger than wood to maintain the level of support you need without the wall underneath.

Baseboards don’t have to be nailed into studs. However, nailing them into studs adds to their stability. When studs aren’t available, you can secure them with drywall nails directly into the drywall and adhesive. Always aim to nail into studs, especially in high-traffic or impact-prone areas.
