"They were able to replace the skylight in less than 2 weeks after the quote. They did a good job and make the finish on the inside look good. A few weeks later, there was a heavy rain and my new skylight is no longer leaking like my old one that was replaced."

"Yanai and team did a great job replacing 4 old deck-mounted skylights. Their bid was way lower than other bids we received, though I decided to go with them due to their roofing expertise and great reviews. They did an excellent job and the new skylights roof looks great."

"The owner saw the problem and did the repair in very little time. He took a photo of the problem to show me which I appreciated. He noted where a tile had been placed  elsewhere on the roof near the seam of a window or skylight (I forget) and commented that that wasn't best practice. The  owner stated I would need a repair (or new roof) for my garage maybe by next year. I asked for a general idea of the cost of a new roof which he provided. He was very professional and personable. No one showed at my first appointment because  of a scheduling mixup within the owner's office. The owner tried to make up for this  at the end of his visit by removing the moss by hand that was growing on a section of roof that  will need repair/replacement soon.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, solar tubes work during the winter as long as it’s light outside and they aren’t covered by snow. Sun tunnels are made to work year-round to bring in natural light, and some people find them even more beneficial during the winter. With less daylight outside, it can be even more important to bring brightness into homes to reduce electricity costs.

Water will leak through a skylight if there are issues in the sealing of the skylight. Find and fix those issues yourself if possible, but it’s a good idea to contact a professional, as there could be much more water damage than you initially saw. Plus, it’s dangerous to work on a roof without the proper safety equipment and know-how.

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.
