"We appreciate you taking the time to rate us on our performance, it helps us to improve our business. We really enjoyed working with you and hope that you will use us again in the future if need arises. Thanks Again, Topside Roofing"
We went through the process of checking references, checking with L&I and the Better Business Bureau and found nothing derogatory about this company. The roofer was prompt, completed the job on time and at the stated price, and cleaned up the construction mess.
During a storm that happened one month past the expiration of the workmanship warranty, we discovered water coming through a bathroom ceiling. We had the repair done (satisfactorily) by a competing roofer who was available, and were told that water had likely been accumulating for some time before outward signs of the leak. Topside would not cover the repair work because of the expired warranty and because we had the repair done by another roofer. We understand that these were the terms of the contract, but felt that Topside might have provided better customer service given the circumstances.
Subsequently, we have discovered additional problem areas. We now have damage to our kitchen ceiling and exterior wall of the laundry room. There are stains on the siding due to water leaking through the eaves. Most recently, a large chunk of drywall fell out of the corner of our bedroom ceiling because of yet another surprise leak. Needless to say, we are not amused.
Topside Roofing has attempted to blame these problems on the roofer who repaired the first leak. They offered us a small discount on a partial roof replacement, but since we are now experiencing trouble the entire length of the house and know there is damage to substructures, we are going to do a complete replacement - and not use Topside Roofing. We've had the roof inspected by different appraisers/roofers who have independently determined that improper nailing caused failure of a roof which should have lasted much longer.
"[member name removed], I am sorry to be reading a review that gives me C rating. From my records and my customer satisfaction acknowledgement that your husband signed I never heard of any such problems. I do recall the felt issue. That was a mistake that was made by our material supplier. I did order the correct material, and the supplier shipped the incorrect material; by no means did we ever have any effort into being shiesty by trying to install with a different felt that would have saved us $162. In regards to the nails through the plywood; it is recomended by the manufacturer that the roof sheeting be penetrated by the nail beyond 1/8 inch. We used 1 1/4 inch nails to ensure that they penetrated the wood. It would not be a good thing if you went into someones attic and did not see the roofing nails through the plywood as to hold the shingles on the roof. I apologize if you called and we did not respond. Seams suprising to me as we have and pay for a 24 hr emergency response phone service that texts my phone, faxes our fax machine, and emails our main office computer as well as my office computer for every call that comes in. In addition to that we pay for another marketing service that tracks all calls and may record the phone conversations of such so that we may review any that we missed. Phone calls are very important to us for current, future, and past customers. I apologize if we did not get back to you; I will be looking through our records to find the missed call, message, or gliche so that I can make such corrections. Please call anytime so that we may answer any questoins that you have or correct any problems that there may be. Thank you for your input. Sincerely, Topside Roofing and Construction"
"We are very grateful that you took the time to review our company and we appreciate any feedback that you gave us. We enjoyed working on your roof and are glad that you are happy with the work completed. Thank you, Topside Roofing"
so the crew had to cover with a tarp, all while putting down the new roof. To me it looked like a challenge, but to them it seemed
to be a normal day. They worked til 7:30 or 8:00 that evening. The second day went well, they got it all done except the skylights,
it took a couple days til they were done. The skylights were installed a few days later. In the mean time I discovered one more
gable board with some rot on it, I called them, they came out looked at it, gave me an estimate, then came back replaced it at a
reasonable price.

"We appreciate you taking the time to write a review of our service and are glad you are happy with the completed job. It was absolute luck that we got the satelite alligned and I still speak of that rare occurrence to this day. We have since had numerous requests for roofing and siding estimates from you as a reference and cannot thank you more for recommending us. You were a pleasure to have as a customer and we look forward to working with you again in the future if any other roofing or siding needs arise."
"Thank you (member name). That was a fun job to do in the middle of an unexpected snow storm during the holidays. I am glad that you trusted our expertise in roofing year round and allowed us to complete the work in a timely manner during such circumstances. I apologize about the staples; our magnet did not work that well in the foot and a half of snow. We did come back when it melted to get them, as well as your neighbors place that we completed the next week. Hope you had a Happy Holidays and thanks for letting us join you during them."
"I am glad to hear that you appreciated the work and our recommendations. We have now done your house roof with shingles, and your barn roof with metal. Whats next? It is a pleasure, as always, to have you as a customer and we look forward to helping you with any other projects that you may have. Thanks again."
"Thank you for taking the time to leave a response. We really appreciate it and it helps our business to know how our customers feel about the service provided."
"I first got a call when a hip shingle blew off, and I was there that day to fix it. Two months later I got a call to take a look at some water stains showing in the ceiling. The water stains were nowhere near the hip shingle blowing off; the stains were all at the peak of the vaulted ceiling, and had traveled two feet down the slope. The hip shingle was about 14 feet down the slope; they had no correlation. I inspected the roof, and even removed and replaced some shingles in order to find why it would be leaking all of the sudden after having been installed for some years now. I found nothing and recommended we take apart the sheet rock so as to see the source of moisture. They decided not to have me do that work and hired a mold and mildew expert/company to do the work and investigation. In meeting with the mold expert and the Ban's, after he had removed the water stained sheetrock and insulation, he too pointed out that the moisture was sourced from condensation. The moisture was being produced from thermal change on the large metal brackets that where holding the large main roof joists together at the peak. The roof had more than adequate intake ventilation at the eaves as well as adequate exhaust ventilation at the peak; all within code. What we did not know is that when the garage was finished with sheet rock, the structure was insulated to the maximum which did not allow for proper air flow. Code requires 1/2" space between the insulation bats and the roof decking. Yes, I installed the roof venting, but did not install the eave venting or the insulation. I am sorry that I did not take responsibility for the mold, but I did not install the insulation, or build your home. I was more than willing to do the work for cost of labor and disposal in order to help out the situation, but I could not find myself at fault, nor could the mold expert find me at fault. I wish you could have understood that my work had nothing to do with your insulation, and you could have saved quite a bit of money. We always respond to calls from customers, we keep all files and documentation, and are always willing to help out in any way we can. The roofer always gets the first phone call if a leak is from the ceiling. I have stopped water intrusion that had to do with, plumbing, insulation, h-vac, decks siding and windows that all appeared to be from the roof. It is not always the roofers fault, but Topside is always there to help, responsible or not."
The siding did take a bit longer than estimated, but again, order changed on them, and the weather was not the best at the time. So I appreciated the roof getting done first and quickly. They made sure to check on various details as they progressed (trim choices, other aesthetic choices in finishing) to make sure we got what we wanted. The detail work is better now than the original siding that was replaced. They were also flexible in mixing regular siding with the shingle look siding. We have a basic rambler, so being able to add some visual detail versus straight runs of siding was also a definite improvement in the house in the final assessment.
They were very clear about issues that came up outside the original estimate. The specific issue was predominately the rot or mold under the siding they were removing that was on the plywood. They were clear about identifying the areas and what the additional costs were related too.
When job was done they did a good job of cleaning up the site, but it was a major project overall so not perfect, but just odds and ends you would reasonably expect to find. Crew compositions changed, but the one on site person responsible for the job overall was consistent and also always good about checking in at start of a day or when heading out depending on how our schedules overlapped.
I think for the cost and final product it is highly likely that I would get a bid from them for any future work and feel comfortable in knowing how their estimate and final cost would play out, and the quality of the final product.
