In 2012 D.J’s Keys expanded to the Burlington area taking on his son-in-law Dave Pope as an apprentice. Currently emergency services are not available in the Burlington area but jobs can be done by appointment. Rekeying your own locks is a low-cost task that prevents you from having to replace the locks themselves completely. The first couple of times you rekey a lock may be challenging because this is an intermediate DIY task. You can purchase a rekey kit from most hardware stores, but make sure you’re buying the kit from the brand of lock in your home that you’re going to rekey. 

Most door knobs can be removed with a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. If you don’t have either of those available, a paper clip or small pin can sometimes work, but the extra effort may not be worth a quick trip to the hardware store.

If part of the key is protruding out of the lock, you can use a pair of needle-nosed pliers or tweezers to gently turn the key in the lock to open the door. If the key is fully inserted into the lock, you may also be able to use a key extractor to help turn the key into the unlocked position. 

But if the key breaks off halfway into the lock or you simply can’t reach it to help engage the unlocking mechanisms, you should probably call a professional.

A keypad deadbolt, a lock requiring a code entered on a keypad entry, can be a convenient option for families with children coming in and out and needing access to the home. It can also offer an easy solution if you rent your home out, since you can easily change the code as needed. So, depending on your home entry’s needs, a keypad deadbolt may be worth the extra expense.

Locksmiths recommend changing your locks once every seven years for the best security at your home. Locks can wear out over time, so you should inspect your locks regularly. A higher grade lock provides you with more cycles than those with a lower grade.
