Dennis is a licensed electronic locksmith with a Type S Electricians License (Electronic Locksmith—Closed Circuit TV and Access Control), and a member of the Green Mountain Locksmith Association (GMLA). In 2012 D.J’s Keys expanded to the Burlington area taking on his son-in-law Dave Pope as an apprentice. Currently emergency services are not available in the Burlington area but jobs can be done by appointment. In some cases this is possible, but it’s not advisable as the screwdriver is likely to leave marks all over the wall and a noticeable dent on the door. Move slowly and carefully if you have to use this method, and consider calling an emergency locksmith right away instead of trying to break in.

A deadbolt lock is typically considered more secure than a regular lock based on its internal construction. Each deadbolt type has varying levels of security, ranging from withstanding a small amount of force to those that can take on multiple strikes and greater force. Regular locks provide little to no security and are typically used more for easy entry and simple installation.

Deadbolts are solid and durable as can be, but the pin and tumbler can still be forced open, thus making this type of lock susceptible to picking. Most types of deadbolts are harder to pick than a traditional spring-based lock, though. It requires a specialized lock pick and a tension wrench to align all of the pins, thus unlocking the door. 

You may be able to get a broken key out of a lock by yourself, depending on the situation. If a portion of the key is still protruding from your lock, try lubricating the keyway and using pliers or even a bobby pin to pull the key out of the hole. If you have jigsaw blades handy, you can also try using those to grab onto the stuck key and pull it out. 

But, if neither option works or you can’t reach the key, your only option is to call a locksmith for help. 

If you also have a standard door leading to your garage, install a robust deadbolt lock and reinforce the frame with security plates. Then, secure any windows with shatterproof glass or film to deter break-ins. Consider a smart garage door opener for your car entrance, enabling remote monitoring and control through your smartphone. Motion-activated lighting around the garage to deter intruders is a great way to amplify these security efforts. Lastly, educate your family on security practices, such as keeping the garage entrances closed and locked.
