Customers say: True professional

"Greg has expertise in many areas, he "does it all!" As he told me "My work is my life! And I DO Care!!" No question he will give you his best in knowledge, experience, and creativity. And he works non-stop like an Energizer Bunny! He thinks about your projects after hours to find the best solution. My 200 year old house put him to the test! He replaced a rotted out door and entryway, resurfaced a floor, dry walled an area where a sky light had been removed, and reframed the area under a toilet that was caving in, painting along the way. And he is repairing my crumbling deck! Luckily he is a "frugal Yankee" and constantly looks for ways to save you money. And, as he says, he leaves your house cleaner and in better shape than when he arrived. Highly recommend!"

"Jack Powell is a gem. He's highly skilled, dependable, and a clear communicator. I had a large second floor deck that was badly sagging and in danger of collapsing. Jack examined the problem, came up with a strategy for repair, and submitted a very reasonable estimate. He clearly explained each stage of work and at the end of each day's work cleaned up the area. The deck now looks wonderful and the work was done on schedule and absolutely on budget. On top of it all, he's a nice guy -- soft spoken, warm, and personable. I recommend him without reservation for any carpentry job."

"Snelling and Sons Construction did an excellent job on my roof. They completed the project exactly within the time frame promised. The estimate and actual cost was the best of four construction firms I interviewed. They were very polite, hardworking and cleaned the entire area after completion."

"Excellent as far as I know so far. Got just in on time for major snowfall with new roof so will see if any leaks come through where we had had trouble before. Manny was pleasant and professional to deal with. I liked how he took pictures to show where the areas of concern were and updated me as the day went on and new work had to be done. His worker worked tirelessly all day long. The cleanup of debris was impeccable."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

A cross brace for a fence gate should stretch from the top corner of the gate’s hinge side to the bottom corner of its latch side at a 45-degree angle to the bottom of the gate. This positioning distributes the bulk of the gate’s weight to the base of the post, taking pressure off the top hinge.

If the bowing basement wall is less than 2 inches, steel or carbon fiber straps are the best solution. For bowing that is more than 2 inches, wall anchors are the most effective. A contractor can help you decide the best method of repair for your home's foundation and also address the root cause of the trouble.

The primary parts of a house that need framing during construction are floors, exterior walls, interior walls, and the roof. The framing in these areas provides the skeleton for adding other materials over the top. With walls, for example, contractors can hang drywall over the interior walls and siding over the outside of the exterior walls. Proper framing ensures a sturdy house that is built to last.

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.
