Robert Rathbone Handyman Services 215N Cabot VT 802-522-6255 Central Vermont's Premier Handyman Services Provider. I have over 35 years of experience in ALL aspects of home care and repair. I believe that whatever project I am working on should be done properly, and to codes. I am not a hack, not a quack...I don't cut corners, and I don't mess around. A high quality result is not much more expensive than a hack job. The results are obvious, visible, and lasting. I have 5 consecutive years of receiving Angi's Super Service Award for Quality and Excellence. Only about 1% on Angi can say that. Those are not participation awards. I am proud to represent Angi in this little corner of Vermont. I believe in honesty and transparency. You found me on a bulletin board. I have not been vetted by Angi, and Angi will never refer anyone directly to me, because I am not a paying customer. This bulletin board is a free service that they offer to non-paying service providers. My reviews should assure you that I will give you highest quality results every time. I will pass ANY background check...the only negative mark on my name is being caught with one joint at Tunbridge Fair in 1986 (85?)...nothing else. I would like to discuss the one bogus bad review of my business....it took me over 5 years to find a person like this, and I found a real winner. This guy is something else...He was attempting to do framing work, using small, 2" 'L' brackets to tie it together. He tried to add significantly more work to an existing arrangement...without adding additional compensation to that arrangement, then got upset that I had the audacity to expect to get more pay for more work. The screen shots he is posting were for a completely different phase of the job....some time prior to our falling out. This fellow wants you to think I took 3 grand from him and split. Nope.We worked the job in phases. I got a 300$ starting payment for the phase I was on...half for starting that phase of the job, another 300$ was to be paid upon completion of that phase. THE 300$ WAS FULLY REFUNDED within 15 minutes of my leaving...unfortunately it only took him 8 minutes to trash me with a B.oguS. review. I didn't even charge for the work I had done. The work was in a place with no power and no heat. When the temperature went to single digits and below zero, I told him my battery-powered tools won't work well in that, and I wasn't much interested in working in it, either. (I was told to use single use hand warmers.) Since it was not an emergency, not an occupied structure, or even a dwelling waiting to be occupied, I said I would be happy to return when things warmed up a wee bit. This guy went off on me like he owned me. Verbally, not in text. That is when my communications stopped, and I walked...I should have done so sooner, for a multitude of reasons that I need not go into here. Enough of that. I've been called worse, by better. :) "Illegitimi Non Carborundum" I have an almost 100% call back rate. The folks who moved away from the area can't call me back, but all of my other clients certainly do. My name has been sold with 3 different homes, and the new owners use me. I restore vintage stereo equipment as a sometimes paying hobby...to keep that equipment in circulation, and to feel the gratification of seeing someone who will enjoy it when they purchase a piece from me. If you would like a nice piece, or entire system of restored vintage audio, I'm right here! I am 100% quality oriented, and I do not cut corners on any project. I will work late if time is a factor to complete a project, and I will respond for an emergency at any hour. I encourage my clients to ask questions...I'll never talk down to you if you ask me about something I'm doing to your home...why and how. I always will have your best interests at heart. Just as I would never say that cutting your finger off is a good idea, I'd never give you bad advice on something else. I do not mark up prices on materials. My job is install em, not sell em. Nobody can say I sold them something they didn't need just so I could make a buck. I do charge, at my lower rate, to go fetch materials. I have a 1 hour charge for estimates...but it's deductible from the final bill. It covers my truck's addiction to gasoline. I have a small mileage surcharge...for trips from 41 to 59 miles, I add 30 minutes labor daily. over 60, an hour a day. I shop locally as much as possible, and network with several other professionals in the area who share the same ethical and quality standards that I do. I feel I'm responsible for the project even if I'm not doing that particular segment of it. If you're not born handsome, ya gotta be handy! My labor rates are: 45$/hr for general work 65$/hr for technical work, like plumbing, electrical, and propane, etc. I do have a 2 hour minimum, in lieu of a service charge...so if I'm coming over, make a list!! Thank you for your time, and for visiting my page.

"Robert was communicative, friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient! He was so good at the initial ask that we had him look at two other plumbing issues, which he fixed. He immediately identified the parts needed and purchased them on the same day so our projects would be finished promptly. I highly recommend Robert for any of your handyperson needs!"

Electrical services FAQs

It’s important to ask an electrician a few questions before you commit to hiring them so you can make an informed decision as a consumer. If you’re getting estimates or considering hiring an electrician, ask them these questions:

  • Are you a full-time electrician?

  • Are you bonded, licensed, and insured?

  • What level of experience do you have as an electrician?

  • Can you please share three references?

  • Do you do residential or commercial electrical work?

  • What kinds of electrical work are you most familiar with?

  • Will any subcontractors be performing the work?

  • Are permits and inspections required?

  • Who is responsible for obtaining permits and inspections?

  • What is your schedule?

  • Do you offer a guarantee or warranty on your work?

  • Will you sign a do-not-exceed clause to keep the job within the budget?

Tipping an electrician is not a requirement nor is it expected, as they build a fair wage into the price of the job. It’s up to your discretion. There are no set rules for tipping electricians, but if they did a great job and you’re so inclined to tip 10% to 15%, it will likely be received with thanks.

Yes, you should get a quote or an estimate from an electrician. Most electricians offer free estimates or quotes. When getting quotes, do your research and verify each electrician’s license. Get quotes from three different electricians to compare. If the prices or items listed appear different on the quotes, ask the electrician to clarify. Learning as much as you can about the electrical work you want done will help you get the most accurate estimate.

Qualified, licensed electricians will charge from $50 to $100 per hour. The cost to hire an electrician for emergency visits may range from $100 to $200 per hour because this urgent service usually takes place during off hours and may require an electrician to leave or reschedule jobs they’re currently working on. Scheduling work on holidays or during periods of high customer demand, like after a major storm, will also lead to higher rates or extra fees.

Yes, although there are different types of electricians, they must be licensed, certified, and in most cases insured. States have different requirements for electrician licensing and certifications. In some cases, there may be licensing requirements at the local level, but not the state level. It’s always a good practice to confirm requirements with your local municipality. If licensing is not required in your area, you may pay more for a licensed electrician with experience than one who is not licensed or certified, but you’re likely to get a better end result for your project.

As you browse our pro listings, take note of the “Angi Approved” badge. Angi Approved businesses meet our standards for certification which include:

  • The owner, principal, or relevant manager passed a criminal background check

  • Required to have applicable state and local licenses

  • Maintain an average star rating of 3.0 or better on our network, if they have at least one review

  • Paying to advertise their services

  • Meeting any other eligibility criteria required by Angi

Keep in mind licensing is different from certifications. A license is a legal requirement to operate a business, while certifications are voluntary.
