Small jobs welcome

"Lonnie and his crew were wonderful to work with and extremely helpful. I needed to get my tiny house situated and get it hooked into another septic system from the main house on the property. We also needed to get hooked into the water of the main house. He worked well with me and the septic design engineer. Most importantly he explained everything to me as I had no idea of the process we needed to follow. He was always pleasant to deal with and flexible. He had to dig up big portions of the yard to do this and he came back to spread grass seed on all the areas that were bare dirt from the project. It blended in so well that nobody can tell the yard had been so torn up two months ago! His quote was very reasonable, and he stuck to it despite having to do a few extra things that were not in the original plan. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Lonnie and his workers. He has integrity, is a hard worker, and does a great job."

"Quick reply, fast estimate, soon scheduled, and done the job. Maybe too fast: the edges of the new pavement were uneven and jagged, but, on my request, they came back and fixed them. But also, with every rain, deep puddles form a few feet in front of the garage. I regret not having explicitly specified before the job that I expect the water to run off--but should I have to."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Burlington's climate presents significant challenges for asphalt paving. The area's 80-100 annual freeze-thaw cycles demand thicker base layers and higher-quality asphalt mixes to prevent cracking. The short installation season, limited to late May through early October, means that unpredictable rain and temperature swings can cause significant project delays. Proper drainage is also essential to handle heavy snowfall and spring snowmelt.

Helpful?

In a typical Burlington home, an asphalt paving project primarily solves problems caused by harsh winters. This includes repairing cracks and potholes from freeze-thaw cycles and damage from road salt. It also addresses critical drainage issues to prevent water from damaging foundations during spring snowmelt. A new surface improves curb appeal, creates a safer area for walking, and allows for much more efficient snow removal.

Helpful?

The short-term benefits of an asphalt paving project in Burlington include an immediate boost in curb appeal, enhanced safety, and easier snow removal for the upcoming winter. Long-term, a properly installed driveway in the VT climate can last 15-25 years, add significant value to your home, and prevent costly foundation repairs by ensuring proper drainage, which also helps protect the Lake Champlain watershed.

Helpful?

Homeowners in Burlington often underestimate the tight seasonal window for asphalt paving, which runs from May to October. This creates scheduling bottlenecks, so booking a pro early is critical. Additionally, the need for city permits for driveways connecting to public roads and the extensive base preparation required for Vermont's rocky, clay-heavy soils are frequently overlooked planning elements that can impact project scope.

Helpful?

In Burlington, small issues escalate quickly due to the climate. Watch for hairline or "alligator" cracks, as they allow water to penetrate and freeze, causing major damage. Standing water after rain or snowmelt indicates a drainage problem that can harm your foundation. Also, look for surface aggregate becoming visible or any heaving, as these are signs that the base is failing and a larger repair is imminent.
