"EXCEPTIONAL OUTSTANDING WORK!! Paul and his professional crew are the true premier artists. Incredible how they not only eliminated all the cracks but Paul perfectly matched the intricate rope design on the den ceiling and swirl designs in living room. The house looks brand new and fabulous! Wow! I never expected Castle to be this great after having been disappointed by failed repair attempts in past years. The entire crew were friendly, prompt, stayed on schedule and cleaned up afterwards. The price was very reasonable, especially considering the extent of repairs needed. No wonder everyone raves about Castle!"

"Over promised and under delivered. Originally said they could have my whole front porch painted . Came to the job and then said they couldn't paint the ceiling (after I ran out and bought more paint). 4 hours into the project they said they would have all of the white trim painted by the time they left. Only completed 3/4ths of the white trim."

"I'm absolutely thrilled with the work Tommy, Brian and Lou did in my 1962 era kitchen and den. They transformed a two dark and dated rooms into bright and beautiful living spaces. I could tell from the first time I met them that they love what they do and it shows in their work. They communicated with me every step of the way and they went above and beyond expectations. I plan to use Tommy's company again to complete the other projects on my list.

Popcorn Ceilings questions, answered by experts

Some pros may recommend covering a popcorn ceiling that tests positive for asbestos with beadboard ceiling planks or drywall. The cost to install a beadboard ceiling averages more than $5,000, but you likely will pay more than the average for the installer to deal with the asbestos safely. Installing a beadboard ceiling or new drywall will disturb the asbestos and release some microscopic fibers, so the installer will need to take precautions.

The easiest way to remove texture from walls is the soak-and-scrape method. You’ll need to spray a section of the wall with water and let the water soak in and soften the texture. Then, you need to scrape the texture off using a drywall taping knife. This method works best with unpainted walls since paint prevents water from saturating the textured joint compound.

In most cases, it is worth removing popcorn ceilings because they are considered outdated and can make a home more difficult to sell. Buyers typically prefer a smooth, modern finish, so removing the texture can increase a home's value and appeal. The necessity can sometimes depend on the housing market; in a competitive market, buyers may be more willing to overlook minor renovations. The most critical factor is the potential presence of asbestos, which is common in older popcorn ceilings and poses a significant health hazard if the material deteriorates. If you know your ceiling contains asbestos, you are required to disclose this when selling, which can be a major deterrent for buyers. In this situation, it is highly recommended to have a professional remove or encapsulate the ceiling to resolve the issue before it impacts the sale.

Priming a popcorn ceiling before painting is a good idea, especially if the ceiling is stained, discolored, or has never been painted. Interior paint primer helps seal the surface, preventing stains from bleeding through and allowing the paint to adhere better. Use a stain-blocking, water-based primer for best results.

Knockdown hides imperfections better than orange peel due to its thicker, more varied pattern. The valleys and peaks make flaws less visible under lighting. However, note that knockdown walls will collect more dust and dirt, so be prepared to wipe them away more frequently than you would with orange peel.
