In some rural areas, a homeowner may not be required to apply for a permit. When building a new driveway on your own, always check with your local building department to see if you need to request a permit. When hiring a driveway contractor, verify that the right permits are being used before driveway construction begins.

The size of your driveway apron will vary based on your town's building codes. On average, they range between 12 and 24 feet wide and eight to 15 feet long. One end of the apron usually matches the width of the driveway—10 to 12 feet wide for a single-car driveway—while the street end flares out to allow cars to turn in and out.

Your city or county will have guidelines about the minimum and maximum width and length of private roads. The average private road is 12 feet wide, and length, of course, depends on your property. Requirements also depend on the amount of traffic and types of vehicles your road experiences. Check with local ordinances before planning a road on your property.
