"Actually S&H sent someone they work with for central vac repair. He was prompt, knowledgeable, pleasant, and had the outlet working again within a half hour. Helped that we were able to get a "new" outlet from across-the-street neighbor who had gotten rid of her system (both systems were part of the original house equipment)."

"David from AirBenders , came out to Sterling, VA was a great guy and knowledgeable. From working on these systems for so long, he almost had a sixth sense about what could be the problem from the symptoms I provided him. He explained everything to me as he fixed the problem. I definitely recommend this company for any plumbing or ac repair"

"The folks from Rick's were professional and checked my heating system thoroughly to try to find and correct a noise issue I had on the upstairs level. They also checked my furnace in the basement to be sure it was working properly. While unfortunately the symptom (and reason for my call) did not present itself while they were in my home and so could not be diagnosed/corrected, they were very courteous and did everything they could."

"R&A did a fabulous job on my interior home painting project. Rebekah came out to prepare the quote and provided a reasonable price. The painting team was also available for a quick turnaround and did a spectacular job. They filled holes, sanded, and painted five rooms in a single day! And the workmanship was incredible! They did an excellent job of coordinating the entire effort as well. I highly recommend R&A and will definitely use them again in the future."

"Excellent. Professionally done at a good price. Spelled out exactly how they would fix it, provided a reasonably priced estimate, and did work as they said they would. NO BS or come on. I went through several contractors/estimates, all of which tried to sell me what I did not need at a much higher price. Handyman in DMV was on the money with what needed down and with the work. Will hire them again."

Central Vacuum Systems questions, answered by experts

Yes, installing a central vacuum system typically adds value to your home. The ease of use, longevity, and superior suction power of a central vacuum system can add up to $2,000 to your home’s value if you decide to sell. Potential buyers may consider the central vacuum a perk to purchasing your home.

A central vacuum system can be a worthwhile investment depending on your needs and budget. While the upfront cost is higher than a traditional vacuum cleaner, it offers significant long-term benefits. These systems can save you time and make cleaning your home easier, as you only need to carry the hose and vacuum head, eliminating the need to lug a heavy unit up and down stairs. They also tend to operate more quietly and can improve indoor air quality. The convenience and performance over many years may make it a valuable addition to your home if you can budget for the initial installation.

Whether talking about a whole-house central vacuum or a portable vacuum cleaner, the expected cost of major repair work should always be balanced against its replacement cost. However, excluding high-cost motor replacements or major electrical trouble, repairs on a central vacuum system are typically far less than the cost of purchasing and installing a new one.

It can be difficult to know right away if your central vacuum is clogged since it operates quietly compared to regular vacuums. However, there are a couple of signs you can look for. If you feel like it’s losing suction or isn’t cleaning effectively, then there’s likely a clog somewhere.

Make sure you turn the vacuum on and feel the end of the hose handle. If you don’t feel any suction, then you’re dealing with a clog in the hose. You can see if the clog is further down in the system by attaching the hose to each outlet until you find the one with the least amount of suction.

While caulking is handy for quite a bit of jobs, it’s still limited. Any crack or gap larger than 1/4 inch is best left for a more intensive repair job. When you hire house painters, they should run a thorough check to see what they need to repair before they start the job.

Large repairs that caulking typically won’t do well with include cracks or holes larger than a 1/4 inch, rotted wood, or metal surfaces, such as garage doors.
