Harvey called within hours of my deal purchase.  He confirmed the scope of work. He asked if I would call him the day prior to remind him what was to be done so that he could have the right guys and equipment there.  ( I'm not a secretary and barely can keep up with my own things!)  Since I did not call him, Harvey called me the night before and again confirmed the scope of work.  He determined that because a larger ladder was needed, the price would be $50 more than the "deal" price.  (Disappointing.)

George arrived on time, or perhaps a few minutes early.  He introduced himself and took a quick assessment of the work to be done.  He did some minor repair work on a ceiling and set about getting things covered for painting.  As the painting progressed, I decided to ask about having the small laundry room adjacent to the kitchen painted.  George called Harvey and the price was $125.00 for the laundry room. ( no ceiling.)  I paid almost as much for the laundry room, as for the entire kitchen.  Regardless, I agreed to the price and George set about getting the job done.  He was professional, fast, efficient, and neat.  The "B" in quality was based on a few small factors. 1.) A very small piece beside the counter was not painted at all.  (approximately 4 inches long and 3 inches wide. 2) A few drops of paint on my white counter.  ( took a little buffing but it came out)   3) 2 spots in the laundry room that will need to be covered as they were missed.  Overall, I was very pleased with the work George did.  He had great lines and edges and overall, the room looks super! If I had it to do over again, I would have either pushed harder on the price, or just waited for another deal, but I would have no problem using this company again.

"After the repair was done I noticed a leak in my bathroom ceiling where one of the roof vents were replaced. I called the Subcontractor Brian on a Saturday morning. The weather was cold and raining. He was at my house within the hour up on the roof and fixed the leak. I havent had any leaks since. I would hire Brain the Subcontractor again."

"Overall, great experience. Only contractor on my list to call back. Most others on Angie's List did not even call back. Showed up on time and very professional. Did work as advertised and did a very good job fixing some faulty roofing and siding. WIll definitely use again in the future for tiling jobs and spring cleaning.

Deck Repair questions, answered by experts

Building codes for deck railings can vary by location, so it's important to consult your local regulations before construction. Generally, a guardrail is required for any deck that is more than 30 inches above the ground.

For residential properties, the standard minimum height for a deck railing is 36 inches. However, some states and municipalities have stricter requirements; for example, California and Washington mandate railings that are at least 42 inches high. Therefore, a 42-inch railing is not considered too high and may be required in your area or chosen voluntarily for additional safety.

In addition to height requirements, codes also specify other safety features, such as the maximum spacing between balusters to ensure they are close enough to prevent a child from squeezing through.

Yes, it is possible to build a small, basic deck for $5,000, particularly if you use less expensive materials and a simple design. To stay within this budget, consider a size under 10x12 feet and use affordable materials like pressure-treated wood or cedar. While the general cost for deck building ranges from $4,350 to $12,560, with an average around $8,200, some projects can be completed for as little as $4,350. You can also save on labor costs by doing the work yourself, but be aware that mistakes could end up costing more than hiring a professional. A contractor may have a higher upfront cost, but they can ensure a safe, stable deck that will last.

Two coats of stain are ideal for the best protection and aesthetic appeal. However, if your decking is made of particularly dense hardwood, you may only need one coat. If you want an intense color, two coats are ideal.

There are approximately 5.33 board feet in a 2x4. You can use the board foot calculator in this article to easily find the answer. A 2x4 is 2 inches of thickness by 4 inches of width, so you need to find the length, with 8 feet being the most common. You’d use the calculator here to multiply 2 times 4 times 8, and then divide by 12, arriving at a total of 5.33 board feet.

The best material for your deck depends on several factors, including your budget, location, aesthetic preferences, and the level of maintenance you’re willing to do. Wood decking, like redwood, ipe, cedar, and pine, lasts the longest, but it’s more expensive and requires more upkeep than composite and synthetic decking.
