My grandfather, Salem M. Eways, came to the United States as a Stone Mason. In the late 1920s, he began selling fine textiles door-to-door in New York City, until he and his brother found an opportunity to earn money cleaning and repairing rugs. With dedication and hard work, they built the business and eventually grew into 4 stores in the Pennsylvania region. Salem then moved to Charlottesville in the early 1960s and opened a store named Salem M. Eways Oriental Rugs, located in University shopping center on Old Ivy Rd. After the passing of my grandfather, my father, Frank S. Eways, a state trooper in Pennsylvania at the time, left his job and moved his family to Charlottesville to take care of the family business. He eventually moved the store to Emmet St. across from Bodo’s Bagels, where he then grew the business to one of the largest sellers of oriental rugs in the United States in the mid-1970s. Eventually all of the Eways brothers joined together to become one of the largest and most respected flooring companies in the region. For over 85 years, and three generations, the Eways family has been providing the finest area rugs, rug care and maintenance. We have reached the world to bring you the best quality rugs available. Come visit our showroom to see the best selection of antique, traditional, and contemporary rugs in the area. Additional emails - [email protected], [email protected]. Award winning. Also serving Nelson, Rappahannock, Richmond, Roanoke, Roanoke City, Rockingham, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Bath, Charlottesville City, Goochland, Scott & Shenandoah Counties.

"It was obvious from the minute we met with Aaron Sheaves that he was experienced, patient, and knew how to interpret what we wanted when we weren't even exactly sure! We are experienced home remodelers and it was great to work with someone who completely met our very high expectations and requirements. Aaron was extremely detail oriented and responsive, had great recommendations for products and colors that would look best with the overall vibe of the house, and kept us informed every step of the process with daily text updates/pictures. Project was completed on time. The floors are absolutely gorgeous and we couldn't be happier. To say he went above and beyond is an understatement and we plan to hire him again within the year when we remodel our kitchen and master bathroom. We can't recommend Sheaves Floors highly enough!"

"Carpet Plus has an extensive selection of carpets and allowed me to take home many samples, over several days. Their communication was consistent and they kept me informed of the status of my order and confirmed scheduling and followed up afterwards to ensure I was satisfied. Their installer is first-rate and she did a flawless job of installing the carpet on our stairs. I highly recommend Carpet Plus."

"Botched install AND reinstall; dismissive, rude staff Flooring purchased and installed in our home in 2023 and joints began to separate within months. When I reported this by phone to Floor Fashions, I was advised to glue the pieces together using wood glue. Glue failed and another joint started bowing. I went back to the company in June 2024 then waited three months for reinstallation. After another month, the reinstalled pieces are now separating as well. Visited showroom to demand resolution. The response of the warehouse manager – responsible for reinstall – was to note that I had not responded to a follow-up call placed three days after the reinstall (seriously). When I explained thst as a customer it’s my responsibility to pay – not to return his calls, his response was “this conversation is over” and walked away. Exchange was witnessed by sales associate who sold us the flooring. Images show install and reinstall."

"This process has been nothing but a headache. I got quotes from a couple of different companies for click together LVT. Floors Are Us came in the lowest and I liked this product the best so I hired then for the job. After I paid for the material Justin told me he would give me a call the next week to schedule a date for install. That week came and went and after an unanswered email and two phone calls I finally was able to schedule an install. I was told the installer would arrive between 8:30 and 9AM and to have all of the appliances, furniture, and toilet removed. I got up early and moved everything outside in preparation: stove, refrigerator, washer, dryer, toilet, etc. 9:30 came and went so I called Justin to find out what was going on. He said the installer was held up by traffic but was on his way. Justin also informed me that on the "very complicated" square footage calculation he made a mistake and didn't order enough floor. We agreed that the installer would put down what they had and then come back later to complete the job. I got another call at 10:30 saying that "the guy upstairs" ordered the wrong floor, that it was a new product etc, and that they would not be able to get the correct floor for two more weeks. I now had to move everything back inside and apologize to my tenant and explain that we were going to have to repeat the process in two weeks. To weeks later I call to make sure the correct product is in and we were actually moving forward with the install. I'm told all is well and that the installer would arrive between 8:30-9AM. I wake up early again and move everything outside once more. 10AM rolls around so I call the office and am told the installer is held up in traffic and will arrive shortly. The installer doesn't show up until 11AM to start work. Overall the work by the third party installer is good, but at the end of the job around 6PM it is clear they are in a hurry to leave. They didn't bring enough shoe molding to finish so I agree to sort that out with the store. They swept up the large pieces of debris but I was left with a floor covered in dust because they were using the miter saw, they had to borrow from me, inside the house. They also dumped some of the construction debris into an old trash can I was waiting to throw away that was missing a bottom (thanks). Two weeks after the install I get a call from Justin wanting to settle up for the balance. I tell him how disappointed I am with the entire process and that I'm ready to be done with it. He apologized and offers to have the installer come back and finish the shoe moulding, but after my experiences of waiting around I tell him I'm not interested. He then reminds me of the big favor he did for me by not charging me for the extra square footage (75sq ft) that they covered because of their miscalculation. To me it felt as if he was throwing that in my face. I ended up paying full price for installation even after the excuses, mix ups, late arrival, and unfinished job. I'm disappointed with this experience and will not be working with this company in the future. From reading the other reviews it is clear that they use the traffic excuse often. I hope this review saves others from enduring the same headache."

Carpet Installation questions, answered by experts

Coordinating carpet installation with other upgrades in Charlottesville is efficient and can enhance results. Consider painting, updating trim, or improving ventilation while rooms are empty. Addressing subfloor repairs or adding moisture control measures at the same time supports long-term flooring durability. Many local contractors offer bundled services, so grouping projects can simplify scheduling and help you maximize the value of your home improvements.

Helpful?

Be cautious of quotes in Charlottesville that lack itemized details for materials and labor or require unusually large deposits. If a professional avoids discussing subfloor preparation, moisture testing, or acclimation, that’s a warning sign. Reliable installers should offer local references, clear warranties, and transparent communication. Avoid anyone using high-pressure tactics or who won’t address your questions about installation methods or flooring materials.

Helpful?

Your Charlottesville home is ideal for carpet installation if your subfloors are even, rooms are well-ventilated, and you’re not dealing with persistent moisture issues. Homes with historic charm—like colonial or Victorian styles—often benefit from carpet’s added insulation and comfort. If you have children, pets, or want to reduce noise, carpet can improve daily living and support better indoor air quality throughout the year.

Helpful?

Charlottesville’s humid subtropical climate means planning is important for successful carpet installation. Scheduling during late fall or early spring, when humidity is lower, helps carpet and padding settle properly. High summer moisture can delay installation and increase the risk of mold. Using moisture barriers, ensuring proper ventilation, and running dehumidifiers are best practices that protect your new flooring investment.

Helpful?

Installing new carpet in Charlottesville offers immediate comfort, noise reduction, and improved insulation—especially valuable in older homes. Over time, well-installed carpet can help maintain property value, appeal to future buyers, and trap allergens common in VA’s pollen-heavy seasons. Quality carpet also makes it easier to keep floors clean and supports a healthier indoor environment as the local climate shifts.
