"I hired Burrows to replace my old water circulated radiant heat and my swamp cooler with duct/vent based heating/cooling. My old house presented some challenges but Richard and his installers figured everything out, even to the point of reworking several things to ensure the system worked to my satisfaction. They were incredibly patient with me as I asked questions throughout the process and they took the time to explain all the design tradeoffs. Richard and the installers were friendly and professional. Really nice people. The install was finished several weeks back and the heat is working perfectly. Waiting for warmer weather to test the central AC unit, but based on the heating performance, expectation is it will work perfectly. No more climbing up on the roof to service that swamp cooler. We were quoted a very fair price that was a bit lower than another company with no push to upsell anything and no hidden costs or surprises. Best of all, the install came in under the quoted price. I am very happy with the entire install and highly recommend Burrows."

If you’re trying to buy a new AC unit, there are a few crucial factors to consider. Look at the cooling capacity, the available warranty, the energy efficiency, and the type of unit. A ductless unit will cost more up front but may be a more viable option if you don’t already have ductwork. If your home has an existing forced-air heat system, you can add a central air conditioner to it. An HVAC technician can retrofit your forced-air heating system by installing an evaporator coil onto the furnace plenum, the box next to the furnace that draws in air. While most air conditioners can last between 10 and 20 years, they will only last this long (or longer) if properly taken care of. Routine maintenance and inspections help keep your AC unit running in tip-top shape but understanding what factors will decrease its lifespan will also help keep your unit running cool.

Some things that shorten your AC’s lifespan include:

  • Extreme outdoor conditions, like high humidity or extensive salt spray 

  • Improper installation

  • Extended run times, either by the unit being too small or the thermostat setting too low

  • Not performing required maintenance

You need to service an HVAC system about twice per year, with a service including an inspection and basic maintenance. It’s best to schedule maintenance in the spring (after the furnace has been running and before the AC kicks on) and in the fall (after the AC worked hard all summer and before winter’s first chill arrives).
