"I hired Harper tree works for an emergency removal. I had a tree fall on my house due to a storm, not only were they quick to come look at it but they got it taken care of with no damage at all. "They did a great job cutting the tree and made it look really nice. I'm not sure if he was just really busy or what but he struggled with getting to the job when he said he would... time management. For someone who is prompt, it was frustrating. But everything eventually got done and it looks great!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

The ideal time to prune a tree depends on the type of tree. Typically, late winter or early spring is a good time to prune but isn't always the case for "towering trees." It's best to trim when trees are dormant and before blooms appear but can vary depending on the tree type. It's always best to research the type of tree or ask a professional tree trimmer to determine when is the perfect time to prune your tree.

Costs range from $500 to $5,000 per tree, depending on size, location, and accessibility.

Pruning a tree is a yearly DIY job that involves removing small dead branches, leaves, and blooms to help the tree grow bigger and stronger. You can often complete the job with basic home gardening tools. Trimming a tree, however, removes larger sections to control the direction the tree grows in and protects your home, utility wires, and yard from potentially dangerous branches.

Only trim palm trees as needed, which is usually about once per year. However, don't stick to that schedule if the palm tree doesn't need it. Avoid trimming palm trees when possible. It’s best to trim palm trees only when you notice a buildup of dead fronds. That said, leave the brown fronds during the dormant season because this organic matter helps protect the tree from the cooler weather.

In the short term, you’ll have a lot of fallen trees to deal with. Tree removal services costs typically start at $200 per tree and increase based on species and size. Then, you’ll have to deal with the loss of trees: That means a loss of shade and a greater risk of rain runoff and erosion. Also, you’ll miss out on the health and aesthetic benefits of having trees on your property, which could even affect the resale value of your home.

That being said, cutting down a tree it’s not always a bad idea. Trees growing too close to rooftops can present fire hazards or debris problems. You may need to remove diseased or dying trees to prevent future issues.
